Hello Movies & TV shows community! if you've read some of my previous entries you'll know by now that I like scary movies in general, and today I'll bring you a review of another not so scary movie but that I think deserves more attention because isn't actually so bad, I'll talk about The Forest, from 2016 starring Natalie Dormer, Taylor Kinney, Eoin Macken. Written by Nick Antosca, Sarah Cornwell and Ben Ketai. Directed by Jason Zada.
Hola Comunidad de Movies & TV shows! si ya han leído algunos de mis previos posts sabrán que me gustan las películas de miedo en general, y hoy les traigo la reseña de otra no tan de miedo pero que creo que merece más atención porque no es tan mala, hablaré de El Bosque Siniestro, de 2016 estelarizada por Natalie Dormer, Taylor Kinney, Eoin Macken. Escrita por Nick Antosca, Sarah Cornwell y Ben Ketai. Dirigida por Jason Zada.
The story is simple, and to certain point based in a real story, just with an augmented supernatural element.
It's about forest Aokigahara located in Japan near mount Fuji and is known for being a place where persons go to end their lives.
During the movie we follow Sara who is searching for her twin sister Jess, both played by Natalie Dormer.
Sara gets a call to let her know her sister went missing after going to that forest, and they don't think she's alive because according to the local legend, those who walk out of the main path to get deep into the forest do so because they don't want to be found.
Without second thoughts, Sara travels to Japan to look for her sister in person, both of them have a connection between them for being twins, they know what happens with each other so when Sara is being lead to an improvised morgue implying that her sister is there, Sara has her doubts because she feels her sister is alive.
Sara gets the help of someone who says is writing a story, his name is Aiden, played by Taylor Kinney, and he gets a guide to take them inside the forest, this guide spends his time searching for bodies in the woods in order to not leave them abandoned there.
Before they start the search, Sara does research about the forest, she searches online and talks with local people, they tell her some people take ropes so that later their bodies can be found by following the rope, other persons warn her not to walk out the main track because once they walk out, the spirits trick visitors and if they have sadness in their hearts they're easy prays. They take this rule very seriously, we can se several signs with that warning in different spots near the forest.
She's also told that some persons have second thoughts, and being in the forest they regret their decision of taking away their lives, those in doubt take tents to have shelter during night and leave the next day.
During the search for Jess, they find her tent, this is a good sign for Sara because she sees it as her sister having second thoughts and not really wanting to kill herself, Sara decides to spend the night in the tent and wait for her twin sister to come back, however the guide and Aiden both try to convince her of only leave a note and come back the next morning but Sara has her mind set on waiting for Jess, so Aiden stays with her to keep her company, the guide tells them he'll come back for them in the morning.
Night goes by and dawn arrives, Jess didn't come back to her tent, Sara wants to go out and keep looking for her ignoring Aiden's suggestion of waiting for the guide to come back for them, she doesn't want to keep waiting.
As search continues Sara starts seeing things, it's hard for her separate reality from what's not, she repeats to herself one of the warnings the guide told her as a rule which is that in case of seeing something weird or out of place it's not real, it's all in her head and tricks from the ghosts from the forests.
Night falls again, Sara and Aiden find shelter in a forest keeper's cabin, at this moment, Sara isn't very trustful of Aiden and the little confidence she had left breaks down when from behind a closed door she hears Jess locked in, from beneath the door both share notes in order to not be heard by Aiden, Jess warns Sara that it was Aiden the one who locked her in and asks her not to trust him and is sure he's going to kill them.
Sara faces Aiden to free her sister, both fight and Sara ends up deadly injuring Aiden, when she finally can open the door she sees it's only an empty basement, her sister is nowhere to be seen.
Meanwhile, somewhere else in the forest, Jess, not knowing her sister is in the same forest, looks for a way out, she's been lost for days and wasn't able to go back to her tent or find the path. At the same time, Rob, Sara's husband, worried for both of them travels to Japan to get to the forest, he organizes a search party, among them the guide that met Sara and they manage to find Jess, who after finding out her sister is in the forest looking for her wants to go back to meet her, but the others prevent her to do so and tell her they'll come back in the morning.
At the cabin, Sara remembers more details of the time they both lose their parents as children, that painful memory has present in her mind ever since she was told her sister was missing.
They lost their parents in the basement of their house, they were watching movies with their grandma when they heard a loud bang, they all rushed to the basement where the sound came from, Jess was the one who saw it all for being the first one down the stairs, the grandma behind her hurried her back up with Sara who stayed behind and didn't see the bodies of her parents, the sound they heard were gunshots and apparently it was the father who shot, that image of the murdered parents is something only Jess carried for years, Sara has been regretful of not being able to help her carry that burden together.
That burden, added to the fact that they recently lost their grandma too make Jess decide to move all around the world to get to Japan and have a new beginning.
Sara doesn't believe Jess wants to kill herself in the forest, but she confesses to Aiden that Jess had tried to commit suicide before in two different occasions, and both times Sara knew something wasn't right with Jess because, as she describes, there was only silence instead of feeling her sister.
While Sara remembers the loss of her parents, she sees a terrifying version of her father appear in the cabin's basement, holding her to drag her to the bottom, she resists, escapes by hurting her father's fingers with a knife where he was holding her and she runs away from the place.
In her escape from the cabin, Sara is able to see Jess running ahead of her, heading towards flashlights, she hurries to catch up with her sister but an apparent student blocks her way, she's seen her before, first at the school where Jess is a teacher at, and later in the forest telling Sara she's seen Jess but it was a trick, so now she's more convinced that what she sees isn't real, but all her beliefs that it's not real is destroyed when ghostly hands come out from the ground and drag her underground, is at that moment when Jess outside of the forest realizes that she can no longer feel the presence of her sister, she says there's only silence, just as Sara described when Jess almost loses her life in her previous tries to leave this world.
She knows it's late for her, with pain in her eyes Jess takes a last glance at the forest, dedicating a silent goodbye to her twin who lays in the basement of the cabin where she imagined her father, the reality is that she never left that place, in her try to break free cutting his parents fingers to release herself, the only thing she did was hurt herself leaving huge cuts big enough to lose blood and her life.
The guide who was helping Sara and Aiden looks at the forest, he seems affected for not believing that Jess was alive and for having lost Sara and Aiden, his sadness is soon replaced with intrigue when he hears sounds coming from the forest, he approaches with caution when he thinks he sees something and the movie ends with a ghostly manifestation of Sara.
La historia es simple, hasta cierto punto basada en hechos reales, solo con un elemento sobrenatural aumentado.
Trata sobre el bosque Aokigahara el cual se localiza en Japón cerca del Monte Fuji y es conocido por ser un sitio al que las personas acuden para quitarse la vida.
En la película seguimos a Sara quien busca a su hermana gemela Jess, ambas interpretadas por Natalie Dormer.
Sara recibe una llamada para informarle que su hermana está perdida luego de ir a ese bosque, y no creen esté viva porque según cuenta la leyenda local, quienes se alejan del camino principal para adentrarse al bosque lo hacen porque ya no quieren ser encontrados.
Sara sin dudarlo viaja hasta Japón para buscar en persona a su hermana, ambas tienen una conexión entre ellas por ser gemelas, saben a grandes rasgos lo que les ocurre mutuamente, así que cuando la guían a una morgue improvisada alegando que ahí se encuentra su hermana, Sara tiene sus dudas porque siente que su hermana está viva.
Sara consigue ayuda de alguien que dice estar escribiendo una historia, su nombre es Aiden, interpretado por Taylor Kinney, y el consigue a un guía que los lleve a adentrarse al bosque, este guía se dedica a buscar cuerpos en el bosque para que no queden ahí abandonados.
Antes de iniciar su búsqueda, Sara investiga sobre el bosque, busca en línea y habla con gente local, le dicen que hay quienes llevan cuerdas para después guiar a otros a encontrar sus cuerpos siguiendo el rastro, otras personas le sugieren que no deje el camino principal ya que al salir del sendero los espíritus engañan a los visitantes y si tienen tristeza en su corazón serán presas fáciles. Se toman muy en serio la regla de no salirse del camino ya que se pueden ver varios letreros con esa advertencia en distintos puntos cercanos al bosque.
También le dicen que hay quienes van para pensar, y estando en el bosque se arrepienten de querer quitarse la vida, los que están en esa situación llevan casas de campaña para resguardarse durante la noche y partir al día siguiente.
Durante la búsqueda de Jess encuentran su casa de campaña, esto es una buena señal para Sara ya que lo considera como que su hermana no quiere quitarse la vida, Sara decide pasar la noche en la casa de campaña para esperar a su gemela, el guía y Aiden la quieren convencer de solo dejar una nota y regresar por la mañana pero Sara está decidida a esperar a Jess, así que Aiden se queda con ella para acompañarla, el guía les dice que regresará por ellos en la mañana.
Transcurre toda la noche y amanece, Jess no regresa a su casa de campaña, Sara quiere salir a buscarla ignorando la sugerencia de Aiden de esperar a que el guía regrese por ellos, ella ya no quiere esperar.
Conforme la búsqueda se alarga Sara comienza a ver cosas, le es difícil separar la realidad de lo que no lo es, para sí misma repite otra de las reglas que el guía le advirtió la cual es de que en caso de ver algo extraño o fuera de lugar no es real, todo ocurre en su cabeza y son engaños por parte de los espíritus que rondan el bosque.
Cae nuevamente la noche, Sara y Aiden encuentran refugio en una cabaña de guardabosques, para ese momento, Sara ya no confiaba mucho en Aiden y la poca confianza que aún le tenía se rompe cuando detrás de una puerta escucha a Jess encerrada, por debajo de la puerta se pasan notas para comunicarse sin ser escuchadas y Jess advierte a Sara que Aiden fue quien la encerró y le pide no confiar en el y asegura que las va a matar.
Sara enfrenta a Aiden para liberar a su hermana, ambos pelean y Sara termina hiriendo a Aiden de muerte, cuando finalmente puede abrir la puerta descubre que es solo un sótano vacío, su hermana no está en ningún lugar.
Mientras, en otro sitio del bosque, Jess sin saber que su hermana está en el mismo bosque, busca la salida pues lleva días perdida y no pudo regresar a su tienda de campaña ni encontrar el camino. A su vez, Rob, el esposo de Sara preocupado por ambas, viaja a Japón para llegar al bosque, organiza una búsqueda con más gente, entre ellos el guía que conoció a Sara y logran encontrar a Jess, quien al saber que su hermana está en el bosque buscándola quiere regresar a encontrarla, aunque le impiden volver a adentrarse y dicen que regresarán por la mañana.
En la cabaña, Sara recuerda más detalles de como ambas perdieron a sus padres siendo niñas, ese recuerdo doloroso la ha acompañado desde el momento en que supo que su hermana está perdida. Ellas perdieron a sus padres en el sótano de su casa, veían películas con su abuela cuando escucharon un fuerte estruendo, todas se apresuraron al sótano de donde provino el sonido, Jess fue quien vio todo por bajar primero, la abuela estando detrás de ella de inmediato la mandó arriba junto con Sara quien se quedó atrás y no vio los cuerpos de sus padres, el sonido habían sido disparos y aparentemente fue el padre quien disparó, esa imagen de los padres asesinados es algo con lo que solo Jess cargó por años, Sara ha estado arrepentida de no haberle ayudado a llevar esa carga juntas.
Esa carga, sumado al hecho de que recién perdieron a su abuela hacen que Jess se decida a atravesar el mundo para llegar a Japón y tener un nuevo comienzo.
Sara no cree que Jess quiera matarse en el bosque, pero confiesa a Aiden que ya había intentado cometer suicidio en dos ocasiones en el pasado, y en ambas Sara supo que algo no marchaba bien con Jess porque según describe, solo hubo silencio en vez de sentir a su hermana.
Mientras Sara recuerda la pérdida de sus padres, ve a una aterradora versión de su padre aparecer en el sótano de la cabaña, sujetándola para arrastrarla abajo, ella se resiste, escapa hiriendo con una navaja los dedos de su padre que sujetan su muñeca y sale corriendo del lugar.
En su huida de la cabaña, Sara logra ver a Jess corriendo delante de ella dirigiéndose a unas luces de linternas, se apresura a alcanzar a su hermana pero una aparente estudiante bloquea su camino, ya antes la había visto, primero en la escuela de la cual Jess es maestra, y después en el mismo bosque diciéndole que había visto a Jess pero solo era un engaño, así que ahora está más convencida de que no es real lo que ve, pero toda su convicción de que no es real es destruida cuando unas manos salen del suelo y la arrastran bajo tierra, es en ese momento que Jess fuera del bosque se da cuenta que ya no siente la presencia de su hermana, dice que solo hay silencio, tal como describió Sara cuando Jess casi pierde la vida en sus previos intentos de partir del mundo.
Sabe que ya es tarde para ella, con dolor en su mirada, Jess da un último vistazo al bosque dedicando un silencioso adiós a su gemela quien yace en el sótano de la cabaña donde imaginó a su padre, en realidad nunca salió del sitio, en su intento de escape hiriendo los dedos de su padre para que la soltara lo único que hizo fue herirse ella misma dejando enormes cortes en su muñeca lo suficientemente grandes para perder sangre y la vida.
El guía que ayudaba a Sara y Aiden mira al bosque, se nota afectado por no haber creído que Jess estaba viva y por haber perdido a Sara y Aiden, su tristeza pronto es reemplazada con intriga cuando escucha sonidos viniendo del bosque, se acerca con precaución cuando cree ver algo y la película termina con una aparición fantasmagórica de Sara.
My opinion
It's a movie that had potential, it's not purely horror but mostly suspense. they could take a different approach on how our own feelings and regrets can affect to the point to become a nightmare, they imply that spirits take advantage of safness and negative feelings, but they only take that in a superficial way and try to make it a horror movie with jump scares that instead of scaring they break the suspense atmosphere they were building.
It seems like as they were filming the movie, they couldn't decide with way to go, what kind of movie they wanted to make.
Although not everything is bad, there's good parts, scenes where they make the viewer think that it's true that Aiden is a villain when in reality he's also going through his own personal nightmare. There's also parts where they make us forget that not everything we see is real.
Since Sara arrives to Japan there's several signs that tell ghosts are already haunting her, guiding her to be one of them to end up roaming through the woods because they feel the sadness he carries for all the losses in her life and because she doesn't want to lose the closest person to her.
Since the beginning, Sara is haunted by her memories and that reflects in her subtle fear of going down stairs, this can be seen when she's being guided to the morgue and has to go down some stairs, she walks in fear and doubt, and it's not until she's downstairs where she can take the smell and is told that there's where they keep the bodies found in the forest, so her doubt in going down was for being reliving the memory of walking down to the basement of her house and not the fear of being guided to the possible body of her sister, due to her knowing very well that her sister is still alive.
When she arrives to stay at a place near the forest, in several occasions she's warned not to go out the path because if she gets lost and has sadness in her heart the ghosts will trick her. In spite of that being a well known rule by local people, Sara comes across a group of student girls that come out the forest, walk across the road and go back to the forest, none of the girls say anything, they just watch Sara with complicity, possibly those students being ghosts already recognizing Sara as some like themselves, or students going to their way to get lost in the forest and end with their lives, because ahead on the movie, Sara comes across with students wearing that same uniform, being one of them one of the many manifestations Sara sees during her search.
The truth is, the firs time I watched the movie I found it boring, and when I watched it again, knowing what was going to happen I could see those subtle details indicating the ghosts are roaming since the beginning, and every time I watch it again I notice more details and that's what I like about this movie, that although it's not great or one of the bests, it has good details that are the ones that make me thing there was a good potential for the story, they just couldn't take advantage of it.
Mi opinión
Es una película que tenía potencial, no es meramente de terror sino más que nada suspenso. Pudieron abordar de manera diferente el cómo nuestros propios arrepentimientos y sentimientos nos pueden afectar al grado de resultar una pesadilla, si bien sí insinúan que los espíritus se aprovechan de la tristeza y sentimientos negativos, solo lo tratan de manera superficial e intentan hacerla una película de terror con sustos repentinos que en vez de asustar cortan la atmósfera de suspenso que se estaba creando.
Pareciera que mientras filmaban la película no se decidían del todo en qué tipo de película querían hacer.
Aunque no todo es malo, hay partes buenas, escenas con las que hacen al espectador pensar que en verdad Aiden es un villano cuando en realidad también atraviesa su propia pesadilla personal. También hay partes en que nos hacen olvidar que no todo lo que vemos es real.
Desde que Sara llega a Japón hay varias señales que indican que los espíritus ya la están asechando, guiándola a ser una de ellos para terminar deambulando en el bosque porque sienten la tristeza que lleva por todas las pérdidas en su vida y porque no quiere perder a la persona más cercana a ella.
Desde el inicio, Sara es asechada por sus recuerdos y eso se refleja en su sutil miedo a bajar escaleras, esto se ve cuando la guían a la morgue improvisada y tiene que bajar unas escaleras, ella avanza con miedo y duda, y hasta que está abajo y percibe el olor es que le informan que abajo es donde guardan los cuerpos encontrados en el bosque, así que su duda en bajar era por estar reviviendo ese recuerdo de bajar al sótano de su casa y no el miedo a ser guiada al posible cadaver de su hermana debido a que sabe muy bien que ella sigue viva.
Cuando recién llega a alojarse cerca del bosque, en repetidas ocasiones le dicen que no se salga del camino porque si se pierde y tiene tristeza en su corazón los espíritus la engañarán. A pesar de que esa regla es muy conocida por la gente local, Sara se topa con un grupo de chicas estudiantes que salen del bosque, atraviesan el camino y vuelven a adentrarse, ninguna de las chicas dice nada, solo ven a Sara con cierta complicidad, posiblemente esas estudiantes siendo ya espíritus reconociendo a Sara como alguien similar a ellas, o bien estudiantes que van en camino a perderse al bosque y acabar con sus vidas ya que más adelante Sara se topa con estudiantes portando ese uniforme, siendo una de ellas una de las tantas manifestaciones que Sara ve durante su búsqueda.
La verdad, la primera vez que vi la película se me hizo aburrida, y cuando la volví a ver, sabiendo lo que pasaría me hizo notar esos sutiles detalles que indican que los espíritus están rondando desde el inicio, y cada que la vuelvo a ver noto más detalles y es lo que me gusta de la película, que aunque no es genial ni una de las mejores, tiene buenos detalles que son los que me hacen pensar que existía buen potencial para la historia, solo que no supieron aprovecharlo.
