I made it just in time for this contest 😅 but I'm glad I had the chance to participate again.

For this week Contest about Controversial movies I picked Planet Terror, a movie from 2007, starring Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodríguez, Marley Shelton and Josh Brolin. Directed by Robert Rodríguez.

The Plot

It's a zombie movie, where we follow Sherry Darling, a gogo dancer whose life dramatically changes in one minute. The city gets infected by a chemical that spreads fast, the infected get deformed and really violent. Sherry joins a group of survivors and together they find the Doctor who created the substance. The doctor tells them that they are immune, otherwise they would be infected already and they plan to get a cure... unfortunately the doctor dies before he can do anything so the survivors flee the city and hide in Mexico where Sherry can live with her baby newborn daughter.

As you can see it's a very predictable plot, but the soundtrack and the aged effects make this movie good... is one of those movies that are good because they're bad... did that make sense?

Why did I pick it?

A couple of years ago, Rose McGowan wrote a book called Brave where she opens up about all of her life and how it was going from a being a child being raised in a cult, to become an actress and having to see how dirty Holliwood is.

She is by herself a very controversial woman, she showed up in a very revealing dress at 1998's MTV Awards when she was dating Marilyn Manson. She has been openly speaking about everything that happened while filming Charmed and how toxic the place was. She was fired by her agent when she complained about an Adam Sandler's casting for a movie where all they wanted was someone who looked good with barely any clothes.

In the book, she talks about Harvey Weinstein and how she was one of his many victims when she was starting her acting career, she got the role of Tatum Riley in the movie Scream, but the price she paid was high and other women in the industry told her to just shut up and deal with it because that's how things work.

Years later she was one of the first ones to openly speak about Weinstein's abuses and didn't rest until he got what he deserved.

Before filming Planet Terror she met Director Robert Rodriguez and both started a relationship, McGowan saw in him a knight in shinning armor, she mentions it in her book, she saw him like her savior because she thought he understood her, she talked to him about everything that happened with Weinstein and how everyone told her to suck it up and move on, and Rodriguez's reaction was wanting to punch Weinstein for what he did and he acted protective of McGowan.

During the filmation of Planet Terror, Rose used to talk to Robert about other things in her life and Robert used some of her most painful memories as storylines for his movie, for example when she talked to him about how hard it was for her when one of her closest friends and lover died, Rodriguez came up the next day with a new scene where her lover in the movie dies in her arms... Also she talked to him about her rape and what Weinstein and many big names in Holliwood are used to do and no one punishes them, Rodriguez in response added a rape atempt at her character.

And as if reliving on screen some of her more painful memories in a fictional world wasn't enough, McGowan found out the day of the premiere, that none other than Harvey Weinstein was one of the producers, she mentions in her book that it was hard to be there having to pose for the pictures with her abuser, and she had to smile as if nothing happened even if her abuser's wife was there and knew everything. She felt betrayed by Rodriguez because he knew everything and one day he wanted to make Weinstein pay and the next he wanted his company to pay for the whole production.

Things like that happen often in the industry, many persons are finally opening up about what they went through as child actors, or young stars that want to start a career but have to deal with those kind of predators that feel untouchable just because they have power and many persons who protect them just for interest.

Apenas llegué a tiempo para el concurso 😅 pero me alegro de tener la oportunidad de participar nuevamente.

Para el Concurso sobre películas controversiales elegí Planeta Terror, una película de 2007 estelarizada por Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodríguez, Marley Shelton y Josh Brolin. Dirigida por Robert Rodríguez.

La Trama

Es una película de zombies, donde seguimos a Sherry Darling, una bailarina Gogo a quien la vida le cambia drásticamente en un minuto. La ciudad se infecta de un químico que se esparce rápidamente, los infectados se vuelven deformados y muy violentos. Sherry se une a un grupo de sobrevivientes y juntos encuentran al doctor que creó la substancia. El doctor les informa que son inmunes, de otro modo ya estarían infectados, y planean conseguir una cura... desafortunadamente el doctor fallece antes de poder hacer algo así que los sobrevivientes huyen de la ciudad para esconderse en México donde Sherry puede vivir con su beba recién nacida.

Como pueden ver es una trama predecible, pero la banda sonora y los efectos de antaño hacen esta película buena... es una de esas películas que son buenas por ser malas... ¿eso tiene sentido?

¿Por qué la elegí?

Hace un par de años, Rose McGowan escribión un libro llamado Valiente en donde se abre al respecto de toda su vida y como fue pasar de ser una niña creciendo en un culto a convertirse en actriz y ver cuán sucio es Holliwood.

Ya por sí misma es una mujer muy controversial, se presentó en un vestido muy revelador en los premios MTV de 1998 cuando estaba saliendo con Marilyn Manson. Ha hablado abiertamente sobre todo lo que pasó filmando Hechiceras y qué tan tóxico era el ambiente. Fue despedida por su agente cuando se quejó del casting de una película de Adam Sandler donde lo único que buscaban era a alguien que se viera bien con casi nada de ropa.

En el libro, habla sobre Harvey Weinstein y como ella fue una de sus tantas víctimas cuando comenzaba su carrera en actuación, obtuvo el papel de Tatum Riley en la película Scream, pero el precio que pagó fue alto y otras mujeres de la industria le dijeron que simplemente se callara y lidiara con ello porque así era como funcionan las cosas.

Años después fue una de las primeras en hablar abiertamente de los abusos de Weinstein y no descansó hasta que obtuviera lo que merecía.

Antes de grabar Planeta Terror, conoció al director Robert Rodríguez y ambos comenzaron una relación, McGowan vio en el a un caballero en armadura brillante, lo menciona en su libro, lo percibió como su salvador porque pensó que el la comprendía, ella le habló de todo lo que ocurrió con Weinstein y como todos le decían que se aguantara y siguiera adelante, la reacción de Rodríguez fue querer golpear a Weinstein por lo que hizo y actuó muy protector de McGowan.

Durante la filmación de Planeta Terror, Rose solía contarle a Robert sobre otras cosas en su vida y Robert utilizó algunos de sus recuerdos más dolorosos para historias en su película, por ejemplo cuando le habló sobre cuan difícil fue para ella cuando uno de sus amigos más cercanos y pareja falleció, Rodríguez al siguiente día salió con una nueva escena donde la pareja de Rose de la película muere en sus brazos... También le habló sobre su violación y lo que Weinstein y otros grandes nombres en Holliwood acostumbran hacer y nadie los castiga, en respuesta Rodríguez añadió un intento de violación a su personaje.

Por si revivir algunos de sus recuerdos dolorosos en un mundo ficticio no era suficiente, McGowan se dió cuenta el día del estreno que el mismo Harvey Weinstein era uno de los productores, ella menciona en su libro que le fue difícil tener que posar para las fotos con su abusador, y que tenía que sonreír como si nada pasara aún cuando la esposa de su abusador estaba presente y sabía todo. Ella se sintió traicionada por Rodríguez porque el sabía todo y un día quería hacer pagar a Weinstein y al siguiente quería que su compañía pagara toda la producción.

Cosas como estas ocurren seguido en la industria, muchas personas finalmente se están abriendo respecto a lo que pasaron como niños(as) actores, o jóvenes estrellas que quieren comenzar una carrera pero tienen que lidiar con esa clase de depredadores que se creen intocables solo por tener poder y cuentan con muchas personas que los protegen por interés.
