Living Lava is always a very hard first position monster to beat, so I can see how that would be a difficult match. The only chance I usually have is playing Wizard of Eastwood to lower the armor, but even then it is a challenge. Death Splinter in general has always been the most challenging for me to win with and I lost about 20% of my rating trying to complete my Death Quest, so I share your experience on that one.
