They say it is the most beautiful bookstore in the world. It is in the city of Buenos Aires, in the Recoleta neighborhood, on Santa Fé Avenue.
The spectacular thing about this bookstore is that it was a theater.
The building was built in the first decade of the 20th century for the purpose of theater and was called "Gran Splendid". The original architecture is preserved today and that is what makes this bookstore so special. Searching for information about its history, I read that Carlos Gardel had sung in this theater.
Then from the 80s to 2000 it functioned as a cinema. Already in 2000 and after a remodeling it began to function as a bookstore. I assure you that entering there is shocking.
Dicen que es la librería mas hermosa del mundo. Está en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, en el barrio de Recoleta, sobre la avenida Santa Fé.
Lo espectacular de esta librería es que era un teatro.
El edificio fue construido en la primera década del siglo XX con la finalidad de teatro y se llamaba "Gran Splendid". La arquitectura original se conserva en la actualidad y eso es lo que hace que esta librería sea tan especial. Buscando información sobre su historia leí que Carlos Gardel había cantado en este teatro.
Luego desde los años 80 hasta el 2000 funcionó como cine. Ya en el 2000 y después de una remodelación pasó a funcionar como librería. Les aseguro que entrar allí es impactante.
It preserves its painted dome, the original balconies, and the red velvet curtain. In what were the boxes there are seats where people sit comfortably to read.
Conserva su cúpula pintada, los balcones originales, el telón de terciopelo rojo. En lo que eran los palcos hay asientos donde la gente se sienta cómodamente a leer.
The old stage is currently used as a cafeteria and has a piano. Music accompanies the reading.
El antiguo escenario actualmente se usa como confitería y posee un piano. La música acompaña la lectura.
To get to the basement there are escalators. There is the sale of music and children's books.
Para llegar al subsuelo hay unas escaleras mecánicas. Allí está la venta de música y libros infantiles.
It is a must-see site for tourist tours. I went to visit a few days ago and it was packed with tourists taking thousands of photographs. I saw them amazed by the majestic nature of the place.
Es un sitio obligado para la recorrida turística. Fui de visita hace unos días atrás y estaba repleto de turistas que tomaban miles de fotografías. Los veía asombrados por lo majestuosos del lugar.
