Ateneo Grand Splendid

I visited the Ateneo Grand Splendid again, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. It's located in the heart of Buenos Aires, in the Recoleta neighborhood, on one of the city's busiest avenues, Avenida Santa Fe.
Years ago, it functioned as a theater and then as a cinema; today it's been transformed into a bookstore and a place to stroll. The old stage is preserved and now houses a café, while the side boxes have become reading nooks.
The place welcomes both locals and tourists. It's always bustling: some are looking for books, others sit and read, and many simply want to see the building and learn about its history while enjoying a coffee.

Otra vez fui de visita al Ateneo Grand Splendid, una de las librerías más hermosas del mundo. Está en pleno corazón de Buenos Aires, en el barrio de la Recoleta, sobre una de las avenidas más transitadas de la ciudad, la avenida Santa Fé.
Años atrás funcionó como teatro y luego como cine; hoy se transformó en una librería y en un espacio de paseo. El antiguo escenario se conserva y ahora alberga un café, mientras que los palcos laterales se convirtieron en rincones de lectura.
El lugar recibe tanto a locales como a turistas. Siempre está lleno de gente: algunos buscan libros, otros se sientan a leer, y muchos solo quieren conocer el edificio y su historia y de paso disfrutar de un café.

At the entrance there's a small park bench, and sitting on it is our famous Mafalda. In this photo, you can make her out in the background, very small, because I took it from a distance and from above. Even so, you can still recognize her unmistakable silhouette.

A la entrada hay un banquito de plaza, y sentada en él está nuestra famosa Mafalda. En esta foto se la distingue al fondo, muy pequeñita, porque la tomé desde lejos y desde la parte superior. Aun así, se alcanza a reconocer su silueta inconfundible.

They also have a merchandise stand with all sorts of souvenirs to take home.

También tienen un puesto de venta de merchandising, con todo tipo de recuerdos para llevar.

I visited the place several times, but this time I found something that surprised me: an exhibit dedicated to Dalí, with books and small figures representing his famous long-legged elephants. An old projector also caught my eye.

Visité varias veces el lugar, pero esta vez encontré algo que me sorprendió: una muestra dedicada a Dalí, con libros y unas pequeñas figuras que representaban sus famosos elefantes de patas largas. Además, me llamó la atención un proyector antiguo.

But there were more surprises: I discovered several books dedicated to Fellini, and then I understood the reason for the presence of the old projector.

Pero había más sorpresas: descubrí varios libros dedicados a Fellini, y entonces entendí el motivo de la presencia del proyector antiguo.

While browsing the bookstore, I came across a tree with pink leaves.

Recorriendo la librería encuentro un árbol de hojas rosadas.

Where the seats once stood, there are now shelves overflowing with books. The old boxes, which once welcomed theatergoers, are now lined with bookshelves and also offer small spaces to sit and read.

Donde antes estaban las butacas, hoy hay estanterías repletas de libros. Los antiguos palcos, que en otro tiempo recibían al público del teatro, ahora están cubiertos de estanterías y también ofrecen pequeños espacios para sentarse a leer.

The view from the highest balcony is truly breathtaking. This time I discovered something new: a small coffee bar. I only went near it, but I imagine that enjoying a coffee from that height must be enchanting, with the majestic perspective of the entire bookstore.

La vista desde el palco más alto es realmente impactante. Esta vez descubrí algo nuevo: un pequeño bar para tomar café. Solo me acerqué, pero imagino que la experiencia de disfrutar un café desde esa altura debe ser encantadora, con la perspectiva majestuosa de toda la librería.

Another beautiful feature is the view from the top of the hall, like a kind of balcony opening onto the central entrance space.

Otro hermoso rincón es la vista desde arriba del hall, como una especie de balcón que se abre hacia el espacio central de entrada.

Regarding the central dome, it is an oil painting representing an allegory of peace. It was created in 1919 to celebrate the end of the First World War, and it still illuminates the space and inspires admiration.

Con respecto a la cúpula central, se trata de una pintura al óleo que representa una alegoría de la paz. Fue realizada en 1919 como celebración por el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y aún hoy ilumina el espacio y admiramos.

It also has a basement level, accessible by escalator. This area is dedicated to music.

También cuenta con un subsuelo al que se accede por medio de una escalera mecánica. Ese sector está dedicado a la música.

Another surprise for me was discovering a small exhibition of antique objects, which I understand are related to the building's history. Among them, what caught my eye the most was a reel of the Argentine film Pampa Salvaje, from the 1960s. I was so impressed that I decided to photograph a detail from the reel.

Otra sorpresa para mí fue descubrir una pequeña exposición de objetos antiguos, que entiendo están relacionados con la historia del edificio. Entre ellos, lo que más me llamó la atención fue una cinta de la película argentina Pampa salvaje, de los años sesenta. Me impresionó tanto que decidí tomar un detalle de la cinta.

That day I visited this old theater, now a bookstore. However, it wasn't my first choice for the afternoon: my initial plan was to visit the Water Museum, but to my surprise, it was closed for renovations. I only managed to take a picture of its facade, so I'll have to save that visit for my next outing.

Ese día fue el de mi visita a este antiguo teatro, hoy convertido en librería. Sin embargo, no era mi primera opción para la tarde: mi plan inicial era recorrer el Museo del Agua, pero para mi sorpresa estaba cerrado por reformas. Solo pude tomar una foto de su fachada, así que la visita quedará pendiente para la próxima salida.
