Talking about food today may seem easy, and yes, it is. In fact, talking about and disseminating information on any topic is easy nowadays thanks to the emergence of social media, not to mention the use of AI. However, we must be careful and choose wisely what we see, read, and hear to ensure that we consume more appropriate than inappropriate information, especially when it comes to the right foods for people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
I would like to clarify, as on other occasions, that I am talking about nutrition for children with autism from my experience as a mother of children diagnosed with ASD and not as a specialist in nutrition or any other area of health.
I will continue, and in this post I want to reflect a little on the positive aspects of taking care of your diet and the negative aspects of not doing so. So, I will start by alerting you to some of the foods that negatively influence behavior, which are the ones that are most appealing to the palate and the ones that do the most damage to people with any degree of autism spectrum disorder. In other words, dietary care must be followed by those diagnosed with level 1 autism (mild or Asperger's), level 2 (moderate), and level 3 (severe).

Something I am very aware of is that eating the wrong foods causes gastrointestinal inflammation, which leads to many physical discomforts that are reflected in the poor behavior of children with ASD. Their emotions will be altered, they will have little ability to concentrate, and this intoxication will be reflected in all the characteristics of autism, which will worsen. I saw this with my own children.
These prohibited foods are all those containing gluten, dairy products, sugar, artificial ingredients, citric acid, and those containing MSG (monosodium glutamate). There are many prohibited foods that could be included in a very long list that would scare us, because diets generate resistance, as we know, because we think about giving up the foods we like to eat and because we believe they involve a lot of expense. That is why I insist that we must choose the information we receive carefully because following a special diet for children with autism does not harm anyone, neither the children nor the family, quite the contrary. I saw this with my own children.

It's also good to know that there is a long list of permitted foods that are not only healthy but also tasty, because I want to make it clear that eating well does not mean eating unpleasant food. Nor does it mean spending a lot of money. On the contrary, you spend less because you no longer buy soft drinks, canned foods, cold cuts, bottled sauces, and many other products. When you do the math, you see that the diet also benefits your wallet. I saw this with my own children.
Therefore, by buying more and spending less, we improve quality of life in all aspects. What is needed in large quantities is a willingness to put on an apron and prepare each meal with love. Have no doubt and trust in special nutrition, instead of continuing with cheese empanadas and soft drinks, because that way there will never be any improvement in autistic behaviors. Keep in mind that the characteristics will depend on the diet of our blue children. I saw this with my own children.
