Hola, querido hiver. Ha pasado casi un mes desde que publiqué mi última reseña literaria. Es hora de traeros mis impresiones sobre un nuevo libro, que es esta ocasión gira sobre el concepto de la mente y cómo puede ser manipulada.
El cerebro es, para mí, el mayor misterio al que se enfrenta el ser humano. Tras años trabajando en la rehabilitación de personas que han sufrido daño cerebral, continúo afirmándolo. Pero dejaré aquí el tema, ya lo desarrollaré mejor en futuras publicaciones. Por ahora, me centro en el ensayo que nos ocupa.
El autor
Pedro Baños nació en León (España) en 1960. Si visitas su biografía en Twitter, donde le encontrarás como @geoestratego, verás que se define como:
Analista, escritor y conferenciante en geopolítica, estrategia, defensa, seguridad, inteligencia, terrorismo, relaciones internacionales.
Por si lo anterior te parece poco, Pedro Baños es Coronel del Ejército de Tierra (Infantería) y Diplomado de Estado Mayor. Ha trabajado como asesor militar en el Parlamento Europeo, y formado parte de tres misiones en Bosnia-Herzegovina. Desde 2012 se encuentra en situación de reserva.
Además de docente en cursos y másteres de diferentes grados, y de recorrer España dando conferencias, es un colaborador habitual en los medios de comunicación de España, tanto escritos como en radio y televisión. Llegó a dirigir durante un breve período su propio programa televisivo, La mesa del coronel.
Los libros publicados hasta ahora por el autor, son:

Resumen del libro
Como planteamiento inicial, el autor postula que a lo largo de la historia, las sociedades han sido controladas mediante la educación, la propaganda o la difusión de bulos y rumores. El objetivo final de este control es dirigir las decisiones que tomamos pensando que son propias.
Para lograr lo anterior, antes deben controlar nuestras emociones. ¿Cuántas veces haces algo tras una profunda reflexión? ¿Y en modo automático o por impulso? El desgaste intelectual que supone el proceso completo de pensar y decidir no está al alcance de todos.
Han logrado convencernos de que es mejor para nosotros estar controlados y vigilados de forma permanente. Para conseguirlo, se han apoyado en las tres “S”: la salud, la seguridad y la sociedad.
Por otro lado, los grandes descubrimientos y avances siempre han venido de la mano de individuos que cuestionaban los criterios oficialistas. La simple duda o réplica se considera contraria a lo tolerable, fomentándose un extremismo que solo sirve para acrecentar las desigualdades y que culmina en deshumanizar al diferente.
A través de las páginas del libro conoceremos las técnicas que se utilizan para manipularnos, desde las más inocentes como, por ejemplo, el neuromárketing, hasta las más retorcidas empleadas en situaciones de torturas, terrorismo o guerras. Aprenderemos sobre los sesgos cognitivos que camuflan la realidad ante nuestros propios ojos. Y terminaremos llegando a la conclusión de que tenemos que pensar siempre por nosotros mismos, pues esa es la verdadera libertad.

El dominio mental es el volumen que cierra la trilogía iniciada con Así se domina el mundo. Desvelando las claves del poder mundial y continuada en El dominio mundial: Elementos del poder y claves geopolíticas. Se puede leer de forma independiente aunque encontramos referencias a los precedentes.
La obra se distribuye en una introducción, siete capítulos y un epílogo final. Está salpicado de citas textuales de autores de todas las épocas y contiene una cantidad enorme de referencias, tanto de libros como de artículos científicos y de páginas web. En la versión para Kindle (la que tengo) se pueden consultar muchas de ellas directamente desde los enlaces facilitados.
El libro estaba a punto de ir a imprenta cuando llegó la pandemia de Covid-19. Esto provocó que Pedro Baños añadiera los capítulos 6 y 7, sacándolo a la venta a finales del año 2020. Logró una enorme repercusión en España gracias a aprovechar un momento perfecto.
Mi opinión
La labor documental es admirable. Para mi gusto, abusa un poco de los enlaces a páginas web. No me refiero a los papers que se almacenan online, que son artículos debidamente revisados por pares y por tanto forman parte de la literatura académica y científica. Hablo de meros artículos periodísticos. Comprendo que la materia es de actualidad y que toca temas confidenciales, lo que dificulta la tarea.
A partir de la primera mitad del libro se repiten muchos conceptos e ideas, se me hizo pesado terminarlo. Además, esto coincide con el análisis de aspectos más centrados en el mundo militar, como tácticas de combate, armamento o métodos de tortura. Para quien sea aficionado a estos temas disfrutará, no tengo ninguna duda, pero en mi caso me resultó duro de leer.
Pese a lo anterior, sí que recomiendo su lectura. Merece la pena ver más allá de lo que aparenta lo que nos rodea y comprender fenómenos que están a la orden del día, nos los cuenten o no.

Hello, dear hiver. It has been almost a month since I published my last book review. It is time to bring you my impressions of a new book, which this time revolves around the concept of the mind and how it can be manipulated.
The brain is, for me, the greatest mystery facing human beings. After years of working in the rehabilitation of people who have suffered brain damage, I continue to affirm this. But I will leave the subject here, I will develop it further in future publications. For now, I will focus on the essay at hand.
The author
Pedro Baños was born in León (Spain) in 1960. If you visit his Twitter biography, where you will find him as @geoestratego, you will see that he defines himself as:

Summary of the book
As an initial approach, the author postulates that throughout history, societies have been controlled through education, propaganda or the spread of hoaxes and rumours. The ultimate goal of this control is to direct the decisions we make in the belief that they are our own.
To achieve this, our emotions must first be controlled. How often do you do something after deep reflection? And in automatic mode or on impulse? The intellectual exhaustion involved in the whole process of thinking and deciding is not within everyone's reach.
They have managed to convince us that it is better for us to be permanently controlled and monitored. To achieve this, they have relied on the three S's (in Spanish): health, security and society.
On the other hand, great discoveries and breakthroughs have always come from individuals who questioned the official criteria. The simple doubt or reply is considered contrary to what is tolerable, encouraging an extremism that only serves to increase inequalities and culminates in dehumanising those who are different.
Throughout the pages of the book we will learn about the techniques used to manipulate us, from the most innocent ones, such as neuromarketing, to the most twisted ones used in situations of torture, terrorism or war. We will learn about the cognitive biases that camouflage reality before our very eyes. And we will conclude that we must always think for ourselves, for that is true freedom.

Mental Dominance is the volume that closes the trilogy begun with This is how the world is dominated. Uncovering the keys to world power and continued in World Domination: Elements of Power and Geopolitical Keys. It can be read independently, although there are references to the preceding books.
The work is divided into an introduction, seven chapters and a final epilogue. It is peppered with quotations from authors of all ages and contains an enormous number of references, from books, scientific articles and websites. In the Kindle version (the one I have) many of them can be consulted directly from the links provided.
The book was about to go to press when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. This prompted Pedro Baños to add chapters 6 and 7, bringing it out at the end of 2020. It made a huge impact in Spain thanks to perfect timing.
My opinion
The documentary work is admirable. For my taste, it abuses a little bit the links to web pages. I am not talking about the papers that are stored online, which are duly peer-reviewed articles and therefore part of the academic and scientific literature. I am talking about mere journalistic articles. I understand that the subject matter is topical and touches on confidential subjects, which makes the task difficult.
From the first half of the book onwards, many concepts and ideas are repeated, and I found it difficult to finish it. Moreover, this coincides with the analysis of more military-centred aspects, such as combat tactics, weaponry and torture methods. If you are a fan of these topics you will enjoy it, I have no doubt, but in my case I found it hard to read.
Despite the above, I do recommend reading it. It is worthwhile to see beyond what is apparent around us and understand phenomena that are the order of the day, whether they are told to us or not.
