More than 1000 km from where I live today, a mother out in the countryside, so that the children wouldn't be afraid of the common sounds of those parts, used to tell stories before bedtime. My mother could barely write and didn't have a vast wealth of knowledge, but she was very creative — or perhaps not so much. The thing is that in my mother's stories there were almost never any bad people. For her, everyone was good. I grew up with those stories, until I ran headfirst into a wall and my reality changed profoundly. But those patterns remain in our unconscious and, as creatures of habit, we keep stumbling over the same stone.
I still have the bitter taste of the FIFA World Cup 2026 final in my mouth — and it's not from the mate, which I happen to drink bitter. It's that feeling of having been deceived perhaps once again, because watching some videos of Maradona, apparently this story already played out in its time. A strange third-place match with more than 10 goals, where supposedly the star Mbappé needed to score a couple of goals to take home the trophy. A red card for Enzo Fernández where one of the yellows, for a player's protest, seems completely insignificant. Argentina players who suddenly turned up injured and, while they were tired, everything seemed to be in order. Unhappy faces during the final team talk and a whole host of situations that I'd rather not mention so as not to make this post too long.
Epic victories against Egypt and England, with a Lautaro Martínez as the hero. And suddenly, in the most important match, Lautaro didn't even set foot on the pitch. It was a tactical decision, an injury… honestly, nothing was made clear. I confess that while analyzing what happened these past few days, I found myself thinking about some very dark theories. Was it a coincidence that everything fell apart right in the last match? There's something scripted about these giant tournaments, with FIFA and powerhouses like the United States and England involved.?
I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory and it probably is. But there's a part of me that still wants to believe in my mother's stories: that there are no bad guys, that everything is clean, that the best team wins because they played better and nothing more. And that's how I presented it in my video about the last match. But the other part of me — the one that grew up watching how big interests move — can't help but be suspicious.
Today we live in the era of social media — YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X are the ones I consume most — where everything is narrated, edited, and interpreted. And sometimes by people who can't even make their own beds (sorry for the outburst, but I needed to say it) and, even worse, it infuriates me when supposedly educated people share that information with little basis. Then we complain about our politicians, when they themselves come from the society we all build together. This is where the famous phrase applies: "consistency, please."
When things don't turn out the way you dreamed, it's really easy to look for explanations other than: the opponent played better or fatigue got the better of us.
Something else that caught my attention was the appearance of that banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas." Could it be that the fans themselves dug their own graves? Now, in the euphoria of the victory, the players grabbed it and rallied around it. I don't see any responsibility on the players' part, given the emotion of the moment. While the statutes prohibit it, I don't think that's sufficient justification for a sanction — which I believe never materialized — but there was indeed a complaint from England over what happened. What might have come of it? Perhaps one day we'll find out.
Something else that caught my attention was the post-World Cup atmosphere. A squad that reached yet another consecutive final deserved a full-on welcome and the people were ready to give it. And that's where I think certain gestures the fans were expecting were missing. When people cheer for the national team they do it as a whole, but there are always players who stand out — in this case the star Lionel Messi. But the man decided not to come. Perhaps he's deeply ashamed, perhaps he couldn't believe what happened in the days leading up to the World Cup final or on the day itself. Because at the end of the day it's his job: a championship is played, whether you win or lose, and that's that. In fact, I think the Argentine fans were left with the flavors of those epic victories and players running their hearts out. I think they are sadder than the entire Argentine people because they know something that I'm sure they can't say out loud.
Finally, this is what I take away: Argentina competed, reached yet another final, and that in itself is an enormous achievement. But as a fan, it's hard to separate the cold analysis from the raw emotion of that Sunday. And as the son of that woman who told me stories without villains, it's even harder to accept that sometimes, in football as in life, the story doesn't end the way you want it to.
Happy day to everyone 🧉.
P.S. Hopefully my friend@hosgug will package all his knowledge on persuasive and addictive writing into a course. I'll give everything I have to try to make it happen.
