Does Tides of War Add to Battlefield 5?

One of the things that is new with Battlefield 5 is tides of war. Basically, they are weekly series of orders that you can complete to get special rewards, like cool cosmetics and new guns. This new set of challenges looks cool, but does it actually add to the game?
