I recently broke up with my girlfriend of almost nine years, and my colleague told me something i wanted to share with you for some additional insight.
He is a few years younger than me and someone who most would call a "fuckboy". He is a self proclaimed player, but a lot of fun to hang out with.
I was telling him about my relationship with my now ex girlfriend and i told him about this one time i bought my girlfriend a gold necklace. This was his reply:
"You should never, never, NEVER EVER buy your girl jewelry!! The moment you give her jewelry you give away your power over her! Jewelry? No, no...shackles!!"
Me being well aware of the character of my dear colleague didn't take anything of what he said to heart. But being out of a long term relationship it got me thinking. First of all i was amazed that someone over twenty could think something this immature and childish. Secondly i tried to find meaning to what he said.
Is it possible there is any truth to what this kid said? Maybe in a more subtle way...
Why do you buy jewelry to your significant other?
Is it an easier way to show affection? A non verbal "I love you"?
Or is it a way to show others that she is "taken"?
I would love to read what you guys have to say about this, especially the ladies.
