I have only skimmed this, but these two statements stood out:

The Russians developed the PBS payment system, tying the ruble to the energy resources at their disposal,

The Vatican is proposing to Moscow to transform the IOR Bank into an external, secure gateway for Russia’s cross-border transactions with conservative Europe in exchange for security guarantees for its flock.

Do these not make it seem as if Russia is making nice with the bad guys?
