Humans have an irrepressible drive to assign meaning and symbolism to just about everything. We attach stories, emotions, even personification to the most mundane of things. And it can elevate us. Or it can repress us.
The power we give away is astonishing. Yet even as I write this, I am overcome by the magnitude of energy I’ve lent to these cheap metal and acrylic numbers that mark the various gates at my community garden. I am fascinated by them, completely obsessed. For me, they hold untold mystery and monumental evocation. Yes, you read that right: I’m giving epic status to a bunch of gate markers!
These are just a few images I’ve created in an ongoing series to explore the relationship between this internal drive and the objective reality of...well...objects.
What do you think about this? Are you enthralled by these images and the meanings they may hold? Do you want to see more? And what things do you assign too much power to?
