As the light began to fade, just as the tide was reaching it's zenith for the day in the late afternoon, huge hands of water began to crash up over the sea wall as if the water was literally trying to climb up the gangway to reclaim the promenade. The sea wall here was built quite recently after years of the sea battering Teignmouth's promenade.

Just in Time

It was a timely measure as a couple of year ago, a barrage of huge winter storms rolled in one after another causing massive damage to this area of the coast. The seawall keeps the coastal railway safe and running. Originally conceived no less than Isambard Kingdom Brunel himself, the railway is an essential connection for the counties of Devon and Cornwall in the South West of the UK, connecting them to the rest of the country with high speed trains.
