Communication is the concept or state of exchanging data or information between entities. It is key to the success of any relationship, union, cooperation or any community for that matter. Humans are not mind readers, hence we can not always accurately determine what another person thinks unless they say so themselves. Where there is a communication gap between parties, a room is created for speculations and assumptions. Sometimes even when the assumptions are right, it would have been easier if there was effective communication. An effective communicator is one who is able to speak to the understanding of their audience, someone who is able to get the message across.

The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said (Peter Drucker)

Communication can be done in so many ways and as technology advances, more innovative means of communication are coming up. Verbal communication (communication by speech, either directly of via telephones) has always been the commonest means of carrying messages across to others. Today, people can communicate via text messages, letters, e-mails, news papers, and the world wide web.

Besides all these, there is still one important means of communication that a lot of us don't take into account: the non-verbal type, what some people may call body language. Sometimes, people are unable to say all that is needed to be said. Other times too, they may say one thing when the direct opposite is true. That is where our ability to read and understand people is important. When people speak, they leave a lot of emotional and other non-verbal cues which can sometimes give them out. Of course, you can't always get these things right but a good communicator should be able to get most of them.

So the next time you speak to someone, listen beyond their words, how they say what they say is just as important.
