One of the places that deeply moves the soul when you visit is the place where Mahatma Gandhi was killed. While there, I felt a great sadness imagining the tragic and heartrending moment of such an incredible crime.
His followers called him Bapu (father). He was a spiritual and political leader of India, known mainly for claiming and leading the independence of India through nonviolent methods.
On January 30, 70 years ago, Gandhi was heading to a square near his home, Birla Bhavan, in New Delhi. Some 500 people gathered to perform a community prayer. A man approached him with his hands together, in sign of prayer. When he was in front of Gandhi, the man shot three bullets in his chest at close range. Gandhi with the gun in his right hand clasped his hands and said: Namaste! (Greetings) ... Hey Rama! (to Hindu deity). He sighed and collapsed slowly on the grass, with the palms of his hands still pressed against each other, wielding a gesture of offering and greeting towards his murderer. This is interpreted as a sign of his spirituality, as well as his idealism in the search for peace in his country.
Raj Ghat is the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi. The black marble tomb is by the words 'Hey Rama!' inscribed. As homage to Gandhi, an eternal flame burns in a copper urn.
