Vila Nova de Gaia or also known as "Gaia" in my opinion is one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in Portugal for "urban" tourism, even though I emphasize "urban" Gaia is also known for its unruly beaches that in summer they are very visited for water sports! Today I took a short tour to show you some of the places that you cannot miss if you are going to visit Porto on your next vacation!🏰📚🚩
Let's go to the market first🙇♂️🧭/Vamos primero al Mercado🏰🚩🍍🍓🌽💐🌼
Whenever I have an opportunity to get to know a new city, the first thing I do is make a short stop at one of its markets to get to know a little about the culture and gastronomy! Gaia, which belongs to the Porto district, is known for its great fish trade! I chose the Bolhão market because I read that it is one of the most emblematic of Porto and here I can find everything I am looking for! from flowers to any type of liquor and Portuguese wine!🍪🍇🍊
One of the main characteristics of this market is that it stands out for being very large and has two floors where all its merchants are distributed everywhere! Its architecture is beautiful being "Neoclassical" everything seems very modern and very clearly inside it, but the Bolhão market is quite old and dates back to 1839 at that time the municipal chamber of Porto decided to buy a piece of land to be able to locate the merchants who already carried out activities in this area! More or less in 1910 the market is already official with a decent structure!🕍🏯🌍😋
Great variety of canned🐟🐠🐙
My experience inside the market was very pleasant, we had a coffee since it was raining a lot! We took a walk to see all the products that are sold in Porto, it was interesting to see the great variety of different packaging of marine products, there were sardine cans of all sizes and models, some are even sold to collect! flowers from different parts of the world and some from Portugal.🧠🌍
A stop on the beach🙇♂️🧭/Una parada en la playa🏰🚩🌊
Imagine going from the beautiful and colorful Bolhão market to the beaches of Gaia in just 15 minutes, you have a wide variety of beaches to choose from since Gaia is a coastal city and is located along the entire coastline of the country, which is why it has more than 15 different beaches, in summer it is quite crowded by tourists from all over the world! Personally, for me there are better beaches in Portugal than those offered by Gaia, as these are very rough and you are literally taking a bath in the Atlantic Ocean! but what do you say surfing??🐠🐟🌊🌊
Church built on a stone🌊🕍
I had been to the beaches of Gaia before, and my favorite activities here are hiking along the coast, there is a very interesting path that starts on the coast of Miramar beach and runs along the entire coast passing by a beautiful church built on the water and which is one of the most visited places in Gaia, then you pass by a stream and the landscape is very beautiful with species of aquatic plants. Therefore I recommend that path here on the beach.🧠🌍
A stop at the Luis I bridge🙇♂️🧭/Una parada en el puente Luis I 🏰🚩
Everyone who visits Gaia stops here at the Luis I Bridge to take a picture, it's not my first time here in Porto so I had already been through the bridge, however never at this time of year when the whole city is decorated for Christmas ! What can I tell you about the bridge? It is worth visiting without a doubt, but you will have a big problem if you are in your own or rented car, it is quite difficult to park so you should look around for a private parking lot and pay for a few hours!🕍📚
Literally if you want to walk from Porto to Gaia or vice versa you will have to go through the bridge here! At this moment they are carrying out some constructions, therefore it is closed to circulate vehicles! From here you have a great 360 degree view of all of Vila nova de Gaia and Porto!😎😎
Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar🙇♂️🧭/Monasterio da Serra do Pilar 🏰🚩
To get to the monastery we must walk a couple of kilometers until we reach the highest area of Vila Nova de Gaia but it is worth it because in the photo you can see the beautiful view you have of the river! Now, you can do this route on foot but be careful if you have any difficulty walking steep roads then it will be difficult for you and take an alternative road where you can go by car! you can see the beautiful and old architecture that is part of the culture of Gaia. By the way you can also take a "cable car" to go up! another alternative for 8 euros!😁😁
What bad luck I have had in my visits to Gaia because I always wanted to enter the Monastery and it was always closed the times I tried but as they say the "third is the charm" I will finally have the opportunity to enter the monastery because we talked about almost 500 years of history!😎😍
The monastery was built in 1672, in 1996 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as you can see it was built in a privileged position since you can see the Luis I bridge and the city, history tells us that the monastery It is older than we think and its construction began in 1538 by the "San Agustin" order, the idea of this monastery was a place for monks to live.🧭📚

The stop at the monastery is very short, it takes about 15 minutes to go through it because you simply have access to the patio and some divisions where there are some tombs of monks who inhabited the monastery between the 15th and 16th century, there is also a statue of the first king of Portugal and founder of the country!🕍📚🧭
