Today I came to take a walk through a garden where there are species of trees from all over the world, from the Chilean forests to the cold lands of the Himalayas, and it is a bit strange because when we read about adaptation we always focus on animals but also plants. They deserve a merit for their level of adaptation in many lands of the planet, like animals there are also invasive plants that alter ecosystems! imagine a fruit can be eaten and dispersed by many animals, ending up spreading throughout an entire country! but this happens 99% due to an anthropogenic intervention (US)! join me in my post to cultivate ourselves a little about the Biodiversity of plants in the world!💚💚

Surely you must be wondering what a zombie has to do with a scientific post! Calm down!!! Actually in Botany there is a scientific term that is given to plant species of any scale and size that to complete their life cycle need a set of specific animals to disperse their seeds but these animals were displaced from their ecosystems! It can be a bit confusing but to understand I will explain it like this: imagine that the apple tree is in the patio of your house, in order to grow in other spaces of your house it needs a "bird" let's say a fruit tree, but you decide to fence the patio of your house and prohibit access to the "bird". How then will the tree disperse in your house if you have removed the "bird" from the ecosystem? is exactly how it works!😮🤔

I adore visiting this type of scientific natural facilities because there is not a day where I do not learn something new, who would say that for example today would go out acquiring a new knowledge in botany, I had never heard the term "living dead" the question is how a scientist manages to determine or put this theory into practice? well what happened was that the famous island of Mauritius there is a tree whose species is called: (Sideroxylon majus) this species has a particularity, so that its seed can germinate it needed an animal BUT ONLY ONE SPECIFIC ANIMAL was the extinct "Dodo", They took a S. majus seed and placed it in the gizzard of a domestic turkey! By doing this experiment the seed was able to break its outer layer that needed a "pre-digestion" and as expected after using the turkey the seed could germinate!🌱🌷

A LITTLE ABOUT BIODIVERSITY🧠👨‍💻/UN POCO SOBRE BIODIVERSIDAD🌿🌳🍀

img_7866.jpg

img_7867.jpg

img_7868.jpg

I mention the term "Biodiversity" so much but I don't remember ever having defined it and in the presence of so many beautiful trees it would be interesting to begin to understand what it means: Biodiversity is like a measure of the great variety of species (animals, plants, microorganisms). whatever has life, in Biology it is said that biodiversity ranges from an invisible gene to a huge ecosystem! Life of this magnitude as we know it today would not be possible without plants, so much so that when there are alterations for example in the Amazon we feel a blow to the planet! all plants have a great goal to maintain balance on earth! And because of their positive impact they have been the subject of studies for thousands of years!💥🧡

Here is one thing that is very important to understand and that is to learn to understand how plant biodiversity should be used, obviously plants are the sustenance of many scales in our society from food to everyday accessories, and it is a fact that it is there to help us grow. as a species! The problem is that not all of us know how to manage this resource and this lack of ignorance is leading us to the destruction of ecosystems! An example is a "rivalry" between wood processing companies, which compete for who produces more by cutting down and deforesting more than what is planted! or even worse, illegal companies take away from the land without giving back, breaking the balance! The principle is (if you remove one tree you plant two), this is how we should be educated.🌵🌴

We have already described and defined the concept of Biodiversity, now we are going to reduce the Biological scale and I will try to explain another very important term and that is the ecosystem, in ecology there are many definitions of ecosystems, some more complex than others, I preferred to define it as: it is an interjection between the communities of animals, plants and microorganisms and their environment interacting as a very functional unit! I mentioned that the earth would not be the same without the vegetation that is present but in reality the trees and plants could not have reached this scale without the animals, so here we understand that all life works between a microscopic interaction up to the largest animal! that's why when you take out a piece everything gets out of control!🌸💐🥜🌷🐛🐌🦉

On one occasion I read about the interest that the Spanish colonizers had for the vegetation of America, we all think that Colon came to South America just for gold! But from here products went to Europe that had been discovered only in America and that were only produced there! So when the indigenous people were displaced from the forests and jungles, the Europeans also appropriated the wealth of the forests, then we can conclude that the importance of forest ecosystems has been valued for more than 500 years! and that it did not have the same "monetary" value as gold but it had an essential value for trade in Spain!🤔😮

Some scientists can show that the (cut and burn) system was a millenary and very old technique in which man could shape a forest to his needs, there are studies in forests and tropical forests of trees that are not indigenous to the site and only There is a way to conclude how that species got there if we are describing a "virgin" place where nobody lives! obviously it is the reflection of our ancestors who worked the forests since they began to appear on the planet after the thaw!😮😮

For me, going to a zoological garden has the same scientific and cultural value as a small botanical garden, I always say where there is a small sign explaining a species is something new to learn! therefore I place a lot of value on these parks, in zoos we learn about animals with a simple problem? not everyone supports the confinement of animals, it is cruelty! In botanical gardens, for example, we do not see this problem, so biologically there is ethics and harmony in these spaces!⛲⛲

To give the true value to a botanical garden we have to see things in more depth, imagine that in this specific park there are some species of African trees that are indigenous to a small space, if a fire were to occur or that species disappears from Africa, where is there a similar one? Well, here ... Then you could assess a possibility to sow and save the species in your native area then gardens like these help to preserve species when they are in a situation of risk! or rather a dying threat!🧭🚩🛑

Here there is a total order, the botanists have control of where and how a certain species of plant is going to grow, unlike a green area where there is no control, in these "scientific" areas how everything is labeled and controlled Scientific work on botany can be done, so we went from being a recreational park to a space where a person can carry out their special degree work and graduate from a specialty!📕📗

Extinction, the spread of invasive species, everything that happens 99% of the time in forests is due to our intervention, not only animals have been extinguished due to our mismanagement of resources, we have also extinguished plant species, for What we can conclude that everything is almost always our fault, the planet suffers a great problem that is "deforestation" but when we focus our attention on this problem we leave another side that has equal weight: (habitat fragmentation), the countries tropical like Brazil is a great example of habitat fragmentation! When in an ecosystem there is a fragmentation of habitat, everything that inhabits it ends up being altered, damaging not only the tree but also the species that shape said habitat!🕵️‍♀️🕵️‍♂️

To understand the issue of fragmentation a little, we must see it like this: what was previously classified as a continuous forest when man intervenes to produce grouping, that continuous forest begins to disappear leaving some spaces without trees, one of the animals that most face problems with the fragmentations are the birds, since they need the trees to place their nests! insects could surely complete their life cycle but other species could not, like birds!😮😮
