I deeply believe that our relationship with minerals is something that has aroused fascination for centuries! whenever we study or see photos of ancient civilizations we will almost always come across an image of a "man, woman or child" wearing an ornament (rock) somewhere on his body! minerals are a symbol of beauty and power!! actually there are "precious" rocks that have the value of a small city... Incredible right? and the more we perfect the techniques to "polish" them then we show an even greater interest in reaching perfection! In my post we are going to enter a private museum to learn a little about minerals and at the same time I will analyze under the microscope 4 types of rocks that I collected all over Portugal!🥽🧤🔬

A few months ago I visited this beautiful private museum of the tycoon José Berardo that is located on the island of Madeira and is one of the least "valued" places of interest since the common tourist only wants to visit beaches, gardens, restaurants! and leave aside these small museums that have a lot of general culture enclosed within their walls! but I had not published this content because I wanted to collect some rocks from Portugal in 4 different places to analyze them under a microscope and see what their characteristics are like! Now that I'm back from the center of the country, everything was ready to bring you this brilliant and interesting post! (1,2)🤔🧠🔬
(1,2) 🧭💎👨‍🏫💥🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

In more than fifteen years of collection, the museum has more than "1000 copies and only 700 are on display", another 300 are so expensive and luxurious that they are kept in a personal collection that Mr. Jose Berardo does not reveal to the public! this private collection is among one of the most important in the world and of course it is here in Portugal! the countries from where most copies were purchased are: "(Brazil, Portugal, North America and Africa). Inside the museum we got a small section of 300 precious and semi-precious rocks!"(1,2)🤯💎💥 🥽🧤💎🤯🤯🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬

The human being, as he evolved, aroused a curiosity that was fed with rocks and little by little he wanted to discover the designs of mother nature, this interest led him to dig deep in search of minerals, rocks and anything shiny that could give him a certain "power among society". And who would say that later the most powerful people on the planet have in their possession the most expensive stones in the world since it symbolizes wealth and power! The message that the small museum tries to show us is that many rocks are placed in exhibitions that simulate how they would be found in nature! and others are suspended in the air giving that "gravitational focus on the universe" (1,2)😮💥🧠

The study of minerals🙇‍♂️💎/ El estudio de los Minerales🔬🌍

We could define "Mineral" as a hard or rigid body that is homogeneous and of course natural! it is classified as an inorganic "element" and that stands out for having an internal crystalline composition, it has in turn a variable chemistry, therefore minerals are the "constitution of rocks". What an interesting thing I learned today at the museum! Did you know??(1,2)📚💥

To classify a mineral we must understand its chemical composition and of course its internal structure! when we put these two properties together then we understand its physics, in a mineral it is vitally important to know its internal structure because its most characteristic properties depend on it, seven crystallographic systems are currently known: (cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, triclinic, hexagonal, trigonal and amorphous).(1,2)🧤🥽🥼🔬🥽🥽🥽🥽🥽🥽🥽🥽🥽🧤

As we have already noticed, there is a wide variety of colors in these specimens, and although many are quartz, the chemical property of the mineral is what gives them their color! to know the real color of a mineral we must observe it through a "recent fissure" using natural light!(1,2)🤩🤩

There is a property in the mineral called (the trace) that is very useful for its identification! the color can be variable and a bit confusing to identify a mineral but the trace is constant this is done by making a "scratch" on a porcelain plate if the "hardness of the mineral exceeds the value of 7 then it can be pulverized in a "mortar "This to turn to dust!(1,2)💥👨‍🔬👩‍💻

Of course, the brightness is one of the most studied properties in minerals and is calculated by the amount of brightness reflected in a fracture (unaltered surface), minerals are divided into 2 groups, metallic and non-metallic.(1,2)😮👨‍🏫

I read about the transparency of the mineral and for it the intensity of light that passes through it is calculated, this has to do with the properties of its atoms, because they are classified in different ways between them (transparent, translucent and opaque).(1,2)😍😍

Remember when they say "a diamond can only be scratched by another diamond"? If this is true or not, there is a property that is related to this explanation and it is its "Hardness". Hardness is defined as the ability of the mineral to withstand the force of another bone mineral "to scratch it".(1,2)😮😮🤔🤔🤔🤔🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Another interesting property in minarets is the (fracture), defined as the cohesion of the crystalline structure of minerals, if we hit a mineral with a hammer it will fragment on irregular surfaces, causing a "fracture" but if it occurs in a certain direction then a (exfoliation) is described(1,2)🤯💥🦾

My little experiment🙇‍♂️💎/ Mi pequeño experimento🔬🌍

I want to make it clear that I am not an expert on this subject and that to identify the rock I used a guide to portugal mineralogy that describes the composition of the rocks in each region of the country! I MAY BE WRONG WITH THE IDENTIFICATIONS but I make my conclusions based on this scientific work! This rock is Dolomites, they are rocks of chemical origin composed "mainly of calcium and magnesium carbonate, I took it from a mountain!(6)👨‍🏫🤔👩‍💻

Quartz is a mineral composed of "silica" because it is the most found mineral on earth, it is normal to find it in many types of mountains, and such was my case, this was easy to identify and I am 100% sure of my description!(4)🌄👩‍💻🤯

Basalt is a dark igneous rock, whose composition is "mafic" rich in magnesium, iron and silica abound on the surface! I captured her from the ground on a mountain(5)🖤💎💥
