A hug to my friends addicted to science! Today I bring a short but quite interesting post because I am going to test the resistance of microorganisms! as "object of study" take a very strange species of euglonophyte, I am going to subject the organism to an environment with very little oxygen and very little sun! The idea of this little experiment is to know if the euglenophytes are really resistant, how resistant they are and what is the maximum resistance temperature! you will be surprised with the results! Un abrazo a mis amigos adictos a la ciencia! hoy traigo un post corto pero bastante interesante porque voy a poner a prueba la resistencia de los microorganismos! como "objeto de estudio" tome una especie muy extraña de euglonofita, voy a someter al organismo a un ambiente con muy poco oxigeno y muy poco sol! la idea de este pequeño experimento es saber si realmente las euglenofitas son resistentes, cuan resistente son y cual es la temperatura maxima de resistencia! te sorprenderas con los resultados! sin mas que agregar disfruta mi post!👨‍🎓🧠🕵️‍♂️

Do you remember that laboratory practice we did in high school where we placed a seed to germinate without light? and for this we placed it in a closed cardboard box! Although there is no "total absence of light" my test tube was subjected to the same conditions, it was stored here in this box so as not to receive direct sunlight, when I measured the temperature it did not oscillate between 24-25 degrees I cannot say which is a 100% controlled environment because there was no way to constantly monitor the temperature! but the water never passed 25 degrees!🕵️‍♀️💥🌡
Recuerdas aquella practica de laboratorio que haciamos en secundaria donde colocabamos a germinar una semilla sin luz? y para ello la colocabamos en una caja de carton cerrada! apesar que no existe la "ausencia total de luz" mi tubo de ensayo fue sometido bajo las misma condiciones, fue guardado aqui en esta caja para no recibir rayos solares directos, cuando medi la temperatura no oxilaba entre los 24-25 grados no puedo decir que es un ambiente 100% controlado porque no tenia como monitorear constantemente la temperatura! pero el agua nunca pasaba los 25grados!🌕🌞

To create an extreme artificial environment, I not only had to remove the sun from the test tube, I also left it stored for 2 months, unopened, without changing the water, without introducing oxygen! therefore this water would be a very difficult environment to inhabit, before closing the tube I took some water collections and I was able to identify a lot of life inside it, from water fleas to diatoms, let's see if after 90 days I could still get the same amount of life! and better yet we can discover which are the organisms capable of living in extreme conditions!🕵️‍♀️🧫👩‍💻
Para crear un ambiente artificial extremo no solo debi eliminar el sol al tubo de ensayo tambien lo deje guardado por 2 meses, sin abrir, sin hacer cambios de agua, si introducir oxigeno! por tanto esta agua seria un ambiente muy dificil de habitar, antes de cerrar el tubo tome algunas colectas de agua y pude identificar mucha vida dentro de ella, desde pulgas de agua hasta diatomeas, veamos si luego de 90 dias aun podria conseguir la misma cantidad de vida! y mejor aun podremos descubrir cuales son los organismos capaces de vivir en condiciones extremas!👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

Before describing the euglenophytes we need to know the theoretical part, and define their ecology a bit! First of all, these microorganisms are cosmopolitans of stopped environments! I mean stagnant water, and it makes sense since it was in these conditions that I extracted my water! They have a peculiarity, they only have a flick to move! a fringe is an extension that is shaped like a "whip", they have an elongated body! we can see them green because "they have chloroplast with chlorophyll a and b! b-carotene and xanthophyll!" one of the characteristics of euglenophytes is that they are green!👨‍🏫🧫
Antes de describir a los euglenofitos necesitamos conocer la parte teorica, y definir un poco su ecologia! primero que nada estos microorganismos son cosmopolitas de ambientes parados! osea de aguas estancadas, y tiene sentido ya que fue en estas condiciones donde extraje mi agua! tienen una particularidad, presentan unicamente un flajelo para moverse! un flajelo es una extension que tiene forma de "latigo", tienen un cuerpo alargado! podemos verlos verdes porque "tienen cloroplasto con clorofila a y b! b-carotenos y xantofila!" una de las caracteristicas de los euglenofitos es que son verdes!🔬🧠

Identification of the microorganism🧠👨‍🏫/ Identificacion👩‍💻🧫

Here we cannot see the scourge very differently but it exists! It only has one flagellum, therefore we rule out that it is a dinoflagellate organism! It has a green color as described, a morphology very similar to the reference! besides being captured in stagnant water! therefore everything indicates that it is certainly a euglenophyte! Identifying the species is not easy! in fact there are people who only specialize in identifying them! but if I had to choose a species I would say that it is "Euglena gracilis" let's see what the scientific reference says about "Euglena gracilis"🧫🔬
Aqui no podemos ver muy diferenciado el flagelo pero existe! solo tiene un flagelo por tanto descartamos que sea un organismo dinoflagelado!, tiene un color verde tal cual se describe, una morfologia muy parecida a la referencia! ademas de ser capturado en agua estancada! por tanto todo apunta que ciertamente es una euglenofita! identificar la especie no es nada facil! de echo hay personas que solo se especializan en identificarlos! pero si tuviera que escoger una especie diria que es "Euglena gracilis" veamos que dice la referencia cientifica sobre la "Euglena gracilis"📕📚

Esta especie es de agua dulce, puede medir unas 20micras, es una alga que esta agrupada en los "euglena" lo sorprendente de esta especie es su capacidad de alimentacion! son "mixotrofo" osea puede producir alimento por fotosintesis! pero si las condiciones no son las ideales entonces utiliza la fagocitosis, la celula de esta alga no es rigida lo que le permite mudar de "apariencia" puede ser alargada o redondeada! y me fascina lo que leo porque es exactamente lo que vi con mi especie!👨‍🏫👩‍💻
This species is from fresh water, it can measure about 20 microns, it is an algae that is grouped in the "euglena" the surprising thing about this species is its feeding capacity! they are "mixotroph" that is, they can produce food by photosynthesis! but if the conditions are not ideal then it uses phagocytosis, the cell of this algae is not rigid which allows it to change its "appearance" it can be elongated or rounded! and I am fascinated by what I read because it is exactly what I saw with my kind!🧠🧫

After making more than 5 observations under the microscope from the same tube, I was surprised because there was nothing alive! literally some small bacteria were around but more complex free living organisms WERE NOT! this environment practically liquid all living beings... BUT.... suddenly I saw something with a good size moving!!! do you know what it was? euglenophytes? How is it possible? how resistant are these algae?🕵️‍♂️👨‍🔬
Luego de realizar mas de 5 observaciones al microscopio del mismo tubo, me sorprendi porque no habia nada vivo!! literalmente algunas pequeñas bacterias estaban por alli pero organismos de vida libre mas complejos no HABIAN! este ambiente practicamente liquido todo ser vivo... PERO.... de repente vi moviendose algo con un buen tamaño!!! sabes que era? euglenofitas? como es posible? tan resistentes son estas algas?😮🤯

And this is why I love science! my experiment is scientifically based, and as you can see euglenophytes are known to be very resistant organisms capable of inhabiting extreme environments! Even heavily contaminated, they can survive in the dark! Let's say that where others failed, these aquatic inhabitants take the prize for resistance! But my experience did not end here! I needed to measure the temperature tolerance!😏😏
Y es por esto que amo la ciencia! mi experimento tiene base cientifica, y como puedes ver las euglenofitas son conocidas por ser organimos muy resistentes y capaces de habitar ambientes extremos! hasta muy contaminados, pueden sobrevivir en la oscuridad! digamos que donde otros no consiguieron estas habitantes acuaticas se llevan el premio a la resistencia! pero mi experiencia no acababa aqui! necesitaba medir la tolerancia de temperatura! 🏆🥇

My experience with the temperature gave me an idea that the species managed to resist temperatures below 35 degrees, above which they began to get stressed and die! I think I discovered its weak point, having a flexible membrane does not allow you to be very resistant to high temperatures! then I can conclude that they are organisms that are super resistant to water quality! but sensitive to temperature! interesting fact right?👩‍🔬🕵️‍♂️
Mi experiencia con la temperatura me dio una idea que la especie conseguia resistir a temperaturas inferior de 35 grados, superior comenzaban a estresarse y morir! creo que descubri su punto debil tener una membrana flexible no te permite ser muy resistente a altas temperaturas! entonces puedo concluir que son organismos super resistentes a la calidad de agua! pero sensibles a la temperatura! interesante dato cierto?🧠📚

I am very confused with this finding, I went through the book from head to toe and I can't identify what this is! If I had to guess, I'd say it's a rotifer! but apparently it is quite resistant because I only got this large species! and this shows that euglenophytes have resistance competition!🤔🕵️‍♂️
Estoy muy confundido con este hallazgo, revise el libro de pie a cabeza y no consigo identificar lo que es esto! si tuviera que adivinar diria que es un rotifero! pero aparentemente es bastante resistente porque solo consegui esta especie de gran tamaño! y esto demuestra que las euglenofitas tienen competencia de resistencia!📚🧠
