Hello science addicts! Today I am very happy because for the first time I observed two species that I had never seen under a microscope and they are very fantastic! it is a Nemertea and a Macrostomum both have that appearance of being "worms" but they are not! they actually belong to a unique phylum of them! and to have more luck with my capture I was able to photograph a species where we can see eggs. Join me in this experience.🕵️‍♂️🧠

About the Nemertea🙇‍♂️🕵️‍♀️/Nemertea🔬🧠

This phylum is known for presenting "acelomate" worms that do not have segments like earthworms for example! In the video you can see their morphological characteristics, they are flattened and elongated animals, their main characteristic is that they have an "evaginable" "proboscis", they are not very big and they are not small either, they measure on average about 20 centimeters, however there is a species that can reach grow about 50 centimeters in length!🤔🧠🔬

They are free-living animals that are mostly found in salt water, those that inhabit fresh water are very specific, I managed to grow it on the edge of my aquarium where sediments are still stored to feed themselves, scientists still cannot affirm with total credibility that they are cosmopolitan and we can get them all over the world because there is no concrete record about that! For example, in Australia there is only one species and in the United States it is quite difficult to see them!🔬🕵️‍♀️

Anatomy🙇‍♂️🕵️‍♀️/Anatomia🔬🧠

The surface of their body is covered by "cilia" an interesting characteristic of the epidermis of these animals is that it "excretes a substance", they have a nervous system with "four ganglia and a brain", as you could see in the video and photos They have 4 eyes but there are species that can have hundreds of them "are photoreceptors" and capture external light stimuli! We also note that the cilia in the epidermis have a chemical function.🕵️‍♀️🔬

They have a "closed" circulatory system and run two extensions to the sides, the circulation occurs in reverse! and they have some pigments unknown to biology! They are very interesting and mysterious animals! the digestive system is tubular and complete with a mouth and anus😮🕵️‍♀️

Prostoma graecense🙇‍♂️🕵️‍♀️🔬🧠

With the help of my Biologist friends I was able to identify the species, it is Prostoma graecense, this species is classified as cosmopolitan and is distributed all over the world! They are hermaphrodites, the species has between "2-3 pairs of eyes", it is believed that it was introduced by man and that is why it is found all over the planet! The most interesting season to study them is in the fall, they are freshwater and difficult to see in the United States!🧠😮

🙇‍♂️🕵️‍♀️Macrostomum🔬🧠

Another species that I photographed for the first time, it is the Macrostomum, a species of flatworms that are also distributed throughout the world, and that are hermaphrodites, free-living and their distinctive characteristic is that they have a stylet that they use to prick the female to introduce his sperm and release it afterwards! The explanation for this is that from time to time they like to exchange genetic material! They are very small, barely reaching 5mm.😮🧠🕵️‍♀️

They are transparent and the smaller species have an oval appearance! their name is derived from "big mouth" and is that some species have a mouth almost the size of the animal", are species that normally feed on algae, and sometimes benthic invertebrates! in fresh water they live in algae or in sediments.🌍🔬
