Fish are one of the oldest animals on the planet, they have adapted to the aquatic environment in a sensational way, and for example the shark has not undergone major changes in its anatomy and yet it is an excellent predation machine! It is not the first time that I deal with the issue of scales, but today I wanted to go deeper, and there is a lot to go into about scales! So make yourself comfortable that in my post I will teach you everything you need to know about scales!🐟🐠🐡

A LITTLE INTRODUCTION🧠🐟👨‍💻/PEQUEÑA INTRODUCCION🕵️‍♂️🔬

When we hear or read the word "scales" the first thing that comes to mind is a fish, right? and of course the scales of this type are only present in fish, that is, a very extensive group! We can get them grouped in the taxonomy of "chordates" of the subphylum "vertebrate", however, we believe that all fish have scales and it is not like that! for example the hagfish that group the (lampreys) do not have scales, their body is slimy and naked! they are said to be the most primitive fish!👨‍🏫🔬🧠🐟🐟🐟🐟👨‍🏫👨‍🏫👨‍🏫👨‍🏫👨‍🏫🕵️‍♂️🕵️‍♂️🕵️‍♂️🕵️‍♂️

When we refer to fish then we describe the group of animals that have a backbone, and that also developed appendices that serve for locomotion in this case we talk about the fins, the fish have different types of fins and each one performs a different function I feel the tail fin the propellant par excellence! In fact, fish are very well related to us so much that it makes us different only because they are not tetrapods! I mean, they don't have 4 legs!😱🔬👨‍🎓😍😍😍😍😍😍🤯🤯😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

Thanks to the scales, fish can be great cosmopolitan, that is, we can get fish in almost any type of body of water, in rivers, in lakes, oceans, and we can even find abyssal fish! but in reality each scale and body of fish, despite living in different depths, maintains the same morphological principle! it only presents some variations! then by common sense we know that not all scales are the same!👀🦿🦾🌊🌊🌊💧💧💧💧🧺🌅🌅🌅🌅🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😮😮😮🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

To define the scale of a fish, let's do an exercise under your skin. Are you? the muscles right? under the muscle we have a support system that allows us to keep everything in its place, right? SURE!!! WE REFER TO THE BONES !!! the scales have a similar function in the fish, so it could be defined as "flattened bones", the set of scales create a clear "exoskeleton" in the body of the fish and we say "exo" because they have an internal skeleton which are the spines ! the scales originate from the famous "mesoderm", as mentioned above there are different types of scales, sizes, designs! but they all have a common goal!🤩🤩🤩🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮🤩🤩🤩🐠🐟🐡🐠🐟🐡

In fact, a simple scale has different functions in the fish, they influence physiological and morphological levels! If you take a scale and try to squash it, you will see that it is not rigid, it is semi-flexible, so the scales allow the fish to make flexible movements under the water, thanks to the scales the fish has a body capable of breaking the water at high speed as they are waterproof! then as a scale it is waterproof since it is composed of "COLLAGEN" so it allows the animal not to lose water from the organism as quickly as for example if we compare them with our skin!😏😏🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😮😮😮😮😮😮😮🧠🔬🔬

Calm there are still other important functions that scales perform! They are excellent protecting the fish from external factors, that is, it prevents the fish from injuring important organs, it also takes care of them from parasites, external bacteria that are in the water! For example, the scales are also able to help the fish when there is turbulence, because it helps them to orient themselves thanks to a sensory line that develops on the surface of the scales!🧐🤓🕵️‍♂️👨‍🎓👨‍🎓

When we switch to a professional microscope we can see the details of the scales, it looks like a fingerprint right? as there are different types of scales we could classify them as: placoids, cosmoids, ganoids, cycloids and ctenoids; The latter being the object of study in this post! Let's not forget that eels, for example, do not have scales for the aquatic environment where they live, they do not need!👨‍🎓🔬🤓🦾👀🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

These scales are very interesting and easy to differentiate because they have "teeth" they also have some ridges that give them a beautiful appearance similar to a shell of a mollusk! Do you know the one that produces the pearls? ... The scale is acquiring various sizes. I mean, a young fish does not have a scale to that of an adult, this tells us that they grow as the fish increases in size!👀👀👀😮😮😮😮😮😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

When we see these photos with a very low magnification of 14x we can see lines that are continuous regular, they are called radii! the study of scales is something very deep since they tell us many things about the individual! As I mentioned earlier, the scales have rings called: (Annuli) that tells us how the fish grows, and these rings do not grow continuously, they depend on external factors!😮😮

img_20211105_172108.jpg

Not all the scale is exposed in the fish, there are two sides, one exposed and the other that is covered by another scale creating layers! In winter, for example, the growth rings in the scales are slower and more remote, this tells us that the animal grows slower in winter, due to its slow metabolism! Who would have thought that a simple scale would tell us so many things, right? that's why at the beginning of the post I compared it with a fingerprint!😮😮

img_20211105_172155.jpg

img_20211105_172228.jpg

When we see this photo we think how a scale can be like this? we do not see that in fish? certain? what happens is that this side is hidden, because it is under another scale creating the layers! If you see in detail in the photo we can also see the bone rings that determine growth!😎😎😎

This is a super magnified view of how the texture of the scale is, it seems very irregular and as you can see it is the result of the collagen that gives that characteristic!😮😮🔬🧫🧬🧬

Fish are fantastic organisms, and the scales are the simple reflection of why they are animals that have been kept in water since prehistoric times! As we saw in the microscope, each scale is like seeing a fingerprint on the fish, it has distinctive characteristics, and they are useful to calculate the age of the animal and at the same time analyze what happened to its behavior under external factors! I hope you have learned something new with this topic!🔬🧫🔭🧬
