Hey all,
A post a bit off topic for me, but this is a sort of test piece.
I've been meaning to share some other interests of mine, besides the weekly podcast, and Ecovillage updates.
This post is about the (kernal and) operating system,Linux.
I should start off by saying I know very little about computers. This is not some geeky tech review of where top gamers should go for their streaming gear..
This is about open source.
For those unaware, open source means the code that comprises software, is available for anyone to read, and therefore modify. This means two things. One, a company can't secretly plant hidden code, such as spyware, without your knowledge.
Two, a community of enthusiastic volunteers can change, improve and maintain projects based on the original software, from minor tweaks and debugging, to full new systems based on very little of the original code...
That's Linux, and it's been on my radar for quite some time..
I first heard of Linux a few years ago
And it took me this long to finally make the move.
I won't lie, it isn't easy or especially simple for complete beginners like myself (sort of similar to HIVE), but once I got the hang of it, the benefits hugely outweigh the disadvantags.
To put it simply, I'm so happy to be rid of Microsoft. For moral, as well as practical reasons.
My biggest hinderence was the limited application of Linux in terms of available software. But luckily over the last few years, the community has come a long way. With lots of new distro (operating systems) completely set up for beginners to start right away, to advanced video, audio graphic software for all my content creation needs and desires.
I am now 100% Linux, podcast videos and all...
And it feels great!
So if you're into open source, leaving Microsoft or Apple, and joining a great community of people working together, then check it out.
There a ton of research on how to set it up, if you would like, I could make a quick video about how to set it up for total beginners.
So there, I did it. I tried writing this post and lost over 1000 words three times...so you benefit from a shorter article..
