This is one of those memories I locked away in a tight box and buried the key. I tried avoiding this by thinking of other songs but none has a special memory attached so, here goes nothing 🕊️.
I didn't believe in love at first sight till I met this guy, let's call him "B".
B and I had a long and scarce online friendship before we met. He was schooling in a nearby country and in 2020 (before the pandemic) he visited his parents in Nigeria (it was the same community I lived in) and asked to see me.
It was a Sunday, I was serving in my unit in church when I saw this handsome young man walk past, it felt like my world stopped spinning and stood still, I felt my heart melting. I instantly recognized him from the photos on his profile, after the service, he came to me and I couldn't help but fall harder, his voice, facial structure, height, the way he called my name, the way he laughed at my weird jokes and how he made me comfortable. It was the most remarkable and amazing feeling I've ever felt and yes we dated😅 but we had it very rough (the worst emotional pain I've ever felt but also the best love story I've had 😔).
I love music generally but this song became OUR favorite, I loved it cause he loved it and he loved that I loved it and that's how it became the most played song when we were together.
Whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of the days I sneaked out of the house to meet with him, it reminds me of the moments we spent together, the days I hid in the bathroom to video/voice call him, the days I stayed outside at night talking to him, the moments we strolled together, those quiet times we held each other and read, the days I spent crying, the days I fell sick cause I missed his hugs and scent, the nights I stayed up soaking my pillow with tears, the bitter arguments, quarrels, the love, betrayal, the genuine happiness, the anger and sadness. All these and everything in between.
There's currently no song that holds more memories than this, sometimes I cry just listening to it. The words in the song may not mean much but the memory it carries cannot be overemphasized.
We were young Posters on the wall
Praying we're the ones That the teacher wouldn't call
We would stare at each other 'Cause we were always in trouble
And all the cool kids
Did their own thing
I was on the outside
Always looking in
Yeah, I was there but I wasn't
They never really cared if I wasn't
We all need that someone
Who gets you like no one else
Right when you need it the most
We all need a soul to rely on
A shoulder to cry on
A friend through the highs and the lows
I'm not gonna make it a-la
La la la la la la
La la la la la –lone
I'm not gonna make it a-la
La la la la la la
La la la la la –lone
Then I saw your face
Your forgiving eyes
Looking back at me
From the other side
Like you understood me
And I'm never letting you go, oh
We all need that someone
Who gets you like no one else
Right when you need it the most
We all need a soul to rely on
A shoulder to cry on
A friend through the highs and the lows
I'm not gonna make it a-la
La la la la la la
La la la la la –lone
I'm not gonna make it a-la
La la la la la la
La la la la la –lone
I'm not gonna make it a-la
La la la la la la
La la la la la –lone
I'm not gonna make it a-la
La la la la la la
La la la la la –lone
I'm not gonna make it alone
La la la la la la –lone
I'm not gonna make it a-la
La la la la la la
La la la la la –lone
'Cause you are that someone
That gets me like no one else
Right when I need it the most
And I'll be the one you rely on
A shoulder to cry on
A friend through the highs and the lows
