Finding inspiration on the streets of Lisbon
Walking through Lisbon while on our recent SteemFest trip I couldn't fail to notice the beautiful tiled facades of some of its magnificent buildings. These beautiful painted tiles are called azulejos and are used to decorate the walls, ceilings and floors. I took some photographs of them on my journey around the city to share with you.
Azulejo
Azulejo, from the Arabic al zellige, is a form of Spanish and Portuguese painted tin-glazed ceramic tilework. Azulejos are found on the interior and exterior of churches, palaces, ordinary houses, schools, and nowadays, restaurants, bars and even railways or subway stations. They were not only used as an ornamental art form, but also had a specific functional capacity like temperature control in homes.

The colours and designs of the beautiful azulejos tiles that I photographed on my walks around Lisbon have inspired today's little watercolour painting.
I'm going to pin this little painting up, and hopefully it will bring a bit of the Portuguese sunshine into my house on this cold day here in the UK.
