Aromas

It's been a hot day and the garden has been filled with the scent of flowers. The subtle fragrance of thyme flowers against the delicate perfume of lavenders, and the spicy aroma of the Helichrysum italicum, known as the curry plant. For this drawing I've placed these flowers next to a sorbaria 'Sem', with its fern-like pinnate leaves.

I started the drawing off using black drawing ink and a dip pen to draw the sorbaria leaves.

The next stage was adding colour using watercolours. I built up layers of yellow watercolour to capture the shape and vivid yellow colour of the Helichrysum italicum flowers.

With the flowers painted it was time to concentrate on the foliage and background colours.
