Sure, look at the craters in the Moon. Every time an object strikes it, it becomes part of the Moon so it too is growing. The more mass an object has, the more gravity and the pressure will eventually create enough heat to melt the core. I think most objects in space were formed this way through the gathering of dust and debris. I think the theories discussed here aren't mutually exclusive, but very much part of the same story.
