Indeed Death Note entertains viewers with intriguing moral dilemmas, but there is no question whether protagonist is evil or not: he is undeniably evil. He kills without hesitation, he kills innocents, he kills without due process, without Proportionality Principle (idea that punishment should be proportional to the crime), and he kills even those who were already convicted (e.g. prisoners). His sense of "justice" is certainly misguided.
