Safety walking alone at night (2024)

A recent European map (data from Numbeo) shows how safe people feel walking alone at night. It highlights Croatia, Slovenia and Iceland as the safest countries (highest safety index), while Belarus, Belgium and France rank lowest on perceived nighttime safety. ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ Conversely, Franceโ€™s score is particularly low (around 35/100), indicating many feel unsafe after dark. Most of Eastern Europe and the Nordics report higher safety, whereas parts of Western Europe (and notably France) report much lower confidence on night streets. ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ Note: this is a perception index (0 = very unsafe, 100 = very safe), not an actual crime rate. The map reminds us to stay vigilant in higher-risk areas, but also that many places (even large ones) remain relatively safe at night.
