Two teams determined to make a statement in the new season went head to head but Tottenham came out the better of it. Speculations have it that he would be heading to Manchester City, the team defeated by his current club.
Manchester City are determined to make a statement and they did in the transfer market with £100,000,000 acquisition of Jack Grealish. City's starting line up is the most expensive yet but they succumbed to the individual brilliance of Son.
Son led the line in the absence of Harry Kane and City hoped to start their title defence with a win against a tough opponent but Tottenham showed quality and determination to impress their new boss; Nuno Espírito Santo and they got off to a winning start after defeating City by 1-0 late on in the game.
Tottenham played the majority of the game on the front foot and caged City to some extent. City showed their threat but they were matched by a spirited Spurs side. Tottenham could have been ahead after Son delivered a lofted indirect freekick into the box aimed at Sanchez. With clashes of head, the ball fell to Lucas Moura at the edge of the box and he unleashed a half volley that was blocked by Gundogan. It was a lucky escape for City there.
Sterling lost the ball at the edge of Tottenham's box as Hojbjerg robbed him and found Lucas Moura who raced through and found Son just outside the box. He tried to produce a curling effort and he did but he missed just by a fraction. Another huge relief for City there as Tottenham came close twice to scoring now. The ball actually came off the body of Cancelo but the referee pointed for a goal kick.
The moment of individual brilliance came for Son in the 55th minute as Bergwijn raced clear on goal and did so well to find Son. Son had it all to do as he gathered the ball and moved on the line just outside the box. He unleashed a brilliant curler that left the goalkeeper rooted on the spot with no chance of saving it. It was a wonderful goal, deserving of a winner. Tottenham dominated City in every department and it shows City are yet to get their groove back. Tottenham deserved the win and they showed class and quality.
Bergwijn should have doubled Tottenham's lead when he was sent through after Lucas Moura was clattered into. He was one on one with the goalkeeper but he sent his effort just wide off the target. He should have buried that chance to take the tally on the night for Tottenham to two but the closest he got was the side of the net, much to his disappointment too.
The game ended 1-0 and it was an horror showing for the Champions. It's a moral boosting performance for Tottenham who might be preparing for a life without Harry Kane and a moment of reflection for City who would need to go back to the drawing board because the Premier League doesn't wait for anyone if they lose the ground this early.
It's understandable that the players would want to impress their new coach and they did but with performances like this, there is no doubt that Tottenham would cause so many teams a lot of problems.
