Democracy means many things to many people. To some, it is a name for a free and enriching communion. To others, it is government of the people by the people and for the people. To Obafemi Awolowo, in democracy, political power is vested in the entire people. It is also the best form of government to some.
Democracy also means equality before the law. To others; it is not as easy as people attribute "the good things of life" or rather the best ways of political affairs to democracy.
In Nigeria for example, some people are beginning to catch cold and see democracy as demon - crazy. How crazy is demon? Is the craziness repairable or redeemable?. The common features of democracy include periodic competitive election; fundamental human rights, opportunity to free judiciary, free press, freedom of speech, free electoral commission, majority rule and minority rights.
"Democracy is a system of government that is never completely achieved". It is however interesting to note that in a democracy, the people control. It has been stated by some scholars that democracy has proved to be unworkable, where the majority of the people are politically inert, uneducated, unconscious of their unity or of any binding common interest. It is a question rather of the level of interest that of the level of intelligence. It is particularly difficult to introduce democratic system into any large country that has been accustomed to more authoritarian government, especially if economic standards are low and the means of communication are undeveloped.
