The job of a Gondolier is very exclusive. One is usually "born" into the business, with boats being passes down through families from father to son in many cases. It is usually difficult for outsiders to break into the business.
The goal is to row a gondola gently and slowly so that the passengers have the sensation they are gliding effortlessly across the water.
