"If they wanted to conquer us, it would have been done."
That's the line that makes the most sense. If an advanced civilization can disable a missile mid-air without detonating it, what do they need our resources for? They're not here to steal they're here to watch.
You're right that our movies have programmed us to fear aliens as conquerors. But maybe that says more about us than about them. We project our own fears onto the unknown.
The idea that they've been watching us for centuries, interested in our evolution that's both humbling and a little terrifying. It means we've never been alone.
