This is a normal human trait. Maybe we do it unconsciously because we had never experienced it before, never had it before, never felt it before. This new thing, situation, person seems too perfect to be true, so we just test it and in that process, we push it to a limit where we end up destroying it.
And let it naturally die. But you forget it's pretty natural to cling to whatever our idea of normalcy is. If we find our hearts getting adrift, we try to clench our palms around it, and when we have opened up and bared our soul it's really hard to go back to being strangers. That's how it is. I think the only thing you can do is yell yourself "this too shall pass"
