Sometimes I wish I did not participate in school debates where I supported that education is better than money, if only I knew batter I would have been in the opposing team and defended the truth that money is better than education. Growing up we were told that education is the key, now we grew up with that mindset and went after knowledge, after education and now we have been able to secure the little we can lay hands on only to realise that education is not the key rather connection is the key. You can have all the certificates that one can acquire in this life and still be jobless while people who have no certificate at all enjoys offices and positions meant for you because they have the connection.
Down here on this part of the world, we have more graduates with certificates roaming the streets and are forced to go into petty businesses all because they cannot find a job after so many years of study. Down here your chances of having your certificate provide your needs and wants are very small, we just acquire the certificates and then they stay in our files and are never put to any good use because we do not have the connection needed to put it to work. Many offices and positions are currently occupied by many unqualified people, while the qualified continues to roam and struggle to put their certificate to use until they eventually give up.
Your certificate adds little or no value to your life on this part of the world especially if you have no connection to activate it, your certificate has the potential to turn your life around but a connection is needed to actually activate that potential and without that connection there is nothing for you. We have more graduates than we can actually count working jobs that pays them pennies and those with no certificates at all doing way better than graduates that spend years of their lives studying.
So if I am asked which one matters between skill and certificate, I will provide my answer depending on my location because I know that there are countries where your certificate can provide you with all you need without having to struggle so much as all you need is a good grade and then there are countries where even your good grades cannot save you, so my answer will come depending on my location, is it a place where certificate needs connection to function properly? Or is it the other way around?
