Emilio Bacardí Moreau: El patriota que modernizó Santiago de Cuba.
Emilio Bacardí es hijo de Don Facundo Bacardí, un “indiano” que emigra desde Sitges. Nació en Santiago de Cuba el 5 de junio de 1844, dedicando una gran parte de su vida al desarrollo de Santiago de Cuba, llegando a ser el primer alcalde de la ciudad al constituirse la República de Cuba.
Fue un ferviente impulsor de la nacionalidad cubana y del desarrollo de la cultura, de tal manera que cooperó con el rescate y adquisición de la casa de José María Heredia, el primer poeta romántico de América. Fundó la Banda Municipal y la Academia de Bellas Artes, y creó 32 escuelas para niños y niñas y una para adultos, bibliotecas públicas en los barrios, además del museo que hoy lleva su nombre en la ciudad.
También fue obra suya el arreglo del hospital civil, el alumbrado eléctrico en la vía pública, el pavimento de calles, y asimismo honró la memoria de los héroes caídos con lápidas y monumentos.
Se interesó, asimismo, por el fomento de minas y construcción de líneas de ferrocarril como la autorizada en 1893 para la explotación de las Minas de El Cobre y el ferrocarril de Santiago de Cuba.
