Hi everyone. In my introductory post and some of my subsequent post, I made mention of the initiative I started to help kids from low income communities. It’s called Mentor an African Child Initiative (MACI). I teach kids from low income communities in undeserved schools, and it is my passion to ensure that equity is served.
Why MACI?
I started MACI to help bridge the achievement gap for kids from low income communities in underserved schools. I volunteered as a teacher late last year to contribute my quota, and to witness first-hand, the challenges faced by the educational sector. Many of these kids are from homes where they live on below a dollar per day. They have no access to ICT facilities neither do they have good role models. I have resolve to embark on a project to ensure that these kids are not left out in modernization, and are also able to compete favorably with other kids from high income communities. MACI’s goal is to improve the kid’s literacy level, to help them develop 21st century skills and capacity to become solution providers, and to breed a complete child who has unique abilities channeled towards the good of mankind. We currently have 12 underprivileged kids on scholarship, and I hope to support more as I keep getting resources.
We have also concluded plans to train kids in batches across the schools in the following areas: digital skills (including coding, programming and App development), science and technology for innovation, writing skills/blogging and art/craft while still pursuing academic outcomes.
CURRENT PROJECTS
1. MACI Digital Equity campaign
Come 23rd of March, we are going to train the first batch of kids on digital literacy. From these, some will be selected that will be further trained and mentored for a year. These kids will also be placed on scholarship. They will be provided with necessary tools and resources, including exposure opportunities to pursue both academic and non-academic outcomes. This training will be done monthly {rolling basis} so we can reach out to more kids.
Yes the kids do computer studies but only on the chalkboard. Many of them have never operated a computer before. To me this is not acceptable! These kids are going to live in a world where their counterparts are given the unfair advantage over them. Inequity has rubbed many kids of a bright future and has denied them the opportunity to potentially be successful in life. MACI seek to change that.
2. MACI ICT Center for kids
MACI plans to install functional ICT centers in strategic locations to serve kids from the area at no cost. It will be powered and maintained by MACI so kids can have access to further training and exposure opportunities at no cost. I have started mobilizing resources for this cause and I hope to complete one center by the end of this year. It will be a solar powered ICT center with 20 computer systems.
