With a great loss, or the fear of loosing, comes the zeal to plan and set goals. Short and long term goals are set. Sometimes, for self improvement, for improving ones productivity, and sometimes, it can be for many other reasons.
We all have a source of motivation. We have that one thing that triggers us to be what we set out to be.
People get triggered by many things, relationship problems, loss of a loved one, and sometimes, the failure of loosing in life.
Yes, inarguably, motivation brings an adrenaline rush, which helps to accomplish a particular task within a speculated period of time. Sometimes, faster than anticipated.
However, just as we do feel motivated, we all have weakness. Weakness that may seem to delay ones progress by limiting their productivity, or give us losses in terms of what we do.
I dont know about any other person, but I have a weak point. A weakness that is always frustrating. Something that greatly affects my productivity and makes me regret many things.
My major weakness is social media. Watching of YouTube videos, chatting and viewing WhatsApp statuses. This is the greatest weakness I ever have.
There was a time when I faced this as a major challenge in my life. Looking back when I was still a student, it was really hard for me to let go of social media.
There is a particular semester when I flopped big time because of social media. My results didn't seem like my own, all because I could not read for my exams.
It all started few months to my exams. About three months to my exams. A promotional exams, in which, I will get demoted if I fail more than four courses.
About two months to the exams, I have not started reading for the big exams. I always procrastinated, while watching YouTube videos. Reading manga, instead of reading books, and watching some videos on WhatsApp and Facebook.
I wasted most of my time doing these things. Sometimes, I will realize that I have to read my books, but then, a YouTube notification will pop up, informing me that my favorite video has started on youtube.
Sometimes, I get worried, what if I fail the exams and get demoted? What will my parents say? What will my friends, well wishers and bad wishers say?
When thinking of this, a message from Facebook and WhatsApp will popup and alleviate my worries, making me think of nothing no more, but the show i want to watch, or the message i want to reply to.
This went on for a long time until one week to my exams. Even at this time, I could not leave my phone, and concentrate on my books.
I will read tomorrow. I always say to my self.
This went on until two days to exams. I went to school one night, to get something from a student that stays in the hostel. I saw some of my course mates, who reading. They were reading in groups, asking each other questions and answering the questions.
I approached them to exchange pleasantries. One talk led to another, and they said that they wanted to read till day.
Seeing how serious they were, I became annoyed at myself because I felt relaxed, and less worried about the big exams that could cost me a huge deal.
I went home, angrily talking to my self on the road, scolding my time for time wastage. I didn't know what to do, so I went straight to the house, offed my phone, and then, I decided to start reading.
Even at this time, the urge to get up from the seat was really intense. I could hardly fight it, but then, I tried as much as possible to remain in my seat and read, even though I was not really understanding the things i read.
Gradually, I began to understand what I read, but the day of the exams came in a flash. I was very annoyed with my self, but I knew that, if I fail the exams, I deserved it. It would be nobody's fault but mine.
I went into the hall, and I wrote well in all the papers. Though my results were really poor, I didn't have a carryover in any course. It was like magic, but I did it. What helped me was the fact that I paid attention in class. Most of the things that was taught in class, was what came out as questions during exams.
I didn't directly attack my weak point, but then, people around me helped me to indirect attack it.
These days, I always try as much as possible to be disciplined. I use some applications, timers and alarms to keep myself way from my phone and other gadgets.
Thank you for reading.
