During the summer vacations, my family and I went on a trip to the Caribbean islands, among them, the dream was to visit the islands of San Martín on the French side, and Sint Maarten, Dutch side, because they are two very peculiar islands and the experience in each one is something special, in spite of being almost united.
Upon entering the ship, we received an excellent treatment, very comfortable rooms and its facilities were spectacular. There were swimming pools, bars and restaurants with plenty of gastronomic variety and for all tastes.
The cruise ship was sailing through the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean and most of the passengers were enjoying a happy trip, but as the afternoon progressed, the sea became stormy, and it started to get terribly cold. The temperature was dropping and people were asking for hot drinks to soothe the cold. Suddenly there was a shortage of chocolate and worse: the coffee had run out!
The coffee-addicted travelers were stunned and, as expected, the situation quickly became tense in the ship's bars and cafeterias. The passengers found themselves in a kind of withdrawal crisis, and the crew members tried to calm them down by offering them other alternatives, but to no avail.
Then, at the darkest moment, a group of passengers decided to take action, among them my father. They knew the situation was serious, and realized that something had to be done to prevent the tension from erupting into a full-blown mutiny. So they took matters into their own hands, and began to work out possible solutions.
They went around the ship in teams and in the cabins, they got enough coffee, in the crew's kitchen and in one or another bar, one of those where they prepared drinks with coffee. Once they had collected as much coffee beans as possible, they got down to work grinding what they could and the ones that were ready, just to prepare them directly. It was not easy because the coffee would already be of very low quality.
Likewise, they experimented until they achieved the exact point, since on the ship there was an expert barista who was in charge of classifying and selecting the best coffee. In spite of the fact that it was not the same as the one always prepared by the cruise service, they achieved something very acceptable, to offer to the passengers and calm them down, since they were almost ready to make a great disaster, and they had to lower their spirits.
That solution prevented the trip from turning into a hurricane of annoyed passengers. Coincidentally, the storm subsided, and so did the passengers' tempers. The passengers were able to relax, further conflicts were avoided and when the rest of the passengers learned that it was other passengers who had collaborated with the crew in search of the much desired coffee, they became the heroes who had worked hard to provide them with their good dose of caffeine.
Finally, we toasted together with a cup of coffee, as a problem that seemed impossible to solve was solved, let alone at sea, in the middle of a cold storm. Likewise, the crew understood that they must take precautions not only in the face of natural disasters, but also in the face of shortages, especially when there is a large majority of coffee drinkers in the world.
So we all continued to enjoy our vacation, more united than ever, thanks to the teamwork of a group of passengers who managed to avoid greater evils in a moment of crisis. The grateful captain, on the farewell evening, presented them with medals of recognition for their quick action in the face of the chaos, and as a gift, a free trip for each of them.
My father had another great gesture of love, but this time it was with me, and he gave me his ticket so that next year I could visit other islands in the Caribbean.
