Frances Ruth Coker Burks fue una extraordinaria mujer que en la época más temida del VIH/SIDA, fue la única que ayudó a los enfermos con este terrible virus, mientras la sociedad les daba la espalda, estigmatizando a estos pacientes con prejuicios morales sin sentido, basados en mitos y total desconocimiento de una enfermedad, a la que muchos temían referirse y más aún, tener a un enfermo de VIH cerca. Ruth Coker Burks como era más conocida, nació el 19 de Marzo de 1959, en el estado de Arkansas. Tuvo una infancia muy difícil ya que su padre murió cuando ella tenía 5 años, quedó con su madre de quien sufrió muchos maltratos psicológicos. Ruth se sintió rechazada y no querida por su progenitora, esto hizo que se identificara con el rechazo y abandono que sufrían los pacientes de SIDA. En la década de 1980, el VIH/SIDA era visto con mucho temor entre la gente, nadie se acercaba a los que portaban está enfermedad. El primer contacto que tuvo Ruth con un paciente de SIDA, llamado Jimmy. Al pobre enfermo nadie lo quería atender ni las enfermeras del hospital. Esto llamó la atención de Ruth y les preguntó porque no lo atendían, a lo que ellas respondieron que Jimmy tenía el cáncer Gay. El total desconocimiento del virus, su transmisión y la estigmatización social hizo que los portadores del VIH fueran abandonados por sus familiares y desechados como ropa vieja. Ruth al ver el abandono y el rechazo al que estaba expuesto Jimmy, hizo querer cuidarlo, hasta su trágica muerte. El joven falleció acompañado de Ruth, fue un alma caritativa que estuvo ahí, cuando más lo necesitaba, después del fallecimiento de Jimmy, Ruth se encargó del entierro, aunque fue muy complicado, porque hasta en la muerte los fallecidos por SIDA eran estigmatizados. Cuenta ella que ningún cementerio quería aceptar los restos de Jimmy, por miedo a que el virus invadiera el campo santo. Ruth había heredado de su madre un pequeño cementerio y ahí pudo sepultar las cenizas de Jimmy, para que finalmente descansara en paz. Desde aquel momento, Ruth sintió que tenía un deber, un deber social para con estos hombres que sufrían, no solo con la carga de la terrible enfermedad, sino con el rechazo y el prejuicio de la sociedad, hasta de sus propias familias. Ruth Coker Burks empezó a hacerse cargo de enfermos de SIDA, los cuidaba, les daba techo, de comer y todo lo que necesitaran hasta sus últimos días. Todos los portadores del VIH acudían a Ruth, quien se había convertido en un ángel para estos hombres rechazados. Ruth les dio esperanza, amor y cuidado, esto hizo que los pacientes de VIH, vivieran un poco más después de ser diagnosticados con el terrible virus. Las autoridades le enviaban cada vez más personas para que los cuidara y les diera una mejor calidad de vida, hasta sus últimos días. Ruth al ver la gran cantidad de personas que tenía decidió que tenía que buscar ayuda, muchas puertas se le cerraron, incluso las de las iglesias, pero esto no desanimó a Ruth y siguió con su loable labor, a pesar de todos los señalamientos que le hacían las personas. Pronto su labor con los pacientes de VIH, fue sacada a la luz. Una increíble mujer luchando contra el SIDA, sin ningún miedo, solo con las inmensas ganas de ayudar a estos pobres enfermos, que lo había perdido todo, a causa de su mal. Con el tiempo se descubrió que el virus no era propio de los Gays, las parejas heterosexuales también estaban sufriendo con este flagelo, y Ruth sintió el deber cívico de concienciar a la gente sobre la importancia del uso de preservativos para evitar la infección. En 1990 las investigaciones del comportamiento del virus, fueron dando frutos, y los tratamientos se hicieron más efectivos, y los pacientes que sufrían con este mal pudieron llevar una larga vida, reduciendo la mortalidad del VIH, pero Ruth Coker Burks fue la auténtica heroína, quien se enfrentó al virus en un momento donde todo era temor, estigmatización y homofobia. Donde nadie quería ver el problema y se hacían los desentendidos, donde ni los gobiernos ponían cartas en el asunto, Ruth acogió a los contagiados, les brindo su amor, su compasión y los hizo sentir aceptados. Ruth Coker Burks, as she was better known, was born on March 19, 1959, in the state of Arkansas. She had a very difficult childhood since her father died when she was 5 years old, she was left with her mother from whom she suffered many psychological mistreatment. Ruth felt rejected and unloved by her mother, this made her identify with the rejection and abandonment suffered by AIDS patients. In the 1980s, HIV/AIDS was viewed with great fear among people, no one approached those who carried this disease. The first contact Ruth had with an AIDS patient, named Jimmy. No one wanted to take care of the poor sick man, not even the nurses at the hospital. This caught Ruth's attention and she asked them why they were not taking care of him, to which they replied that Jimmy had Gay cancer. The total ignorance of the virus, its transmission and social stigmatization caused HIV carriers to be abandoned by their relatives and discarded as old clothes. Ruth, seeing the abandonment and rejection to which Jimmy was exposed, made her want to take care of him, until his tragic death. The young man died accompanied by Ruth, he was a charitable soul who was there, when he needed it most, after Jimmy's death, Ruth took care of the burial, although it was very complicated, because even in death those who died from AIDS were stigmatized. She says that no cemetery wanted to accept Jimmy's remains, for fear that the virus would invade the cemetery. Ruth had inherited a small cemetery from her mother and there she was able to bury Jimmy's ashes, so that he would finally rest in peace. From that moment, Ruth felt that she had a duty, a social duty towards these men who suffered, not only with the weight of the terrible disease, but with the rejection and prejudice of society, even from their own families. Ruth Coker Burks began to take care of AIDS patients, took care of them, gave them shelter, food and everything they needed until their last days. All the HIV carriers came to Ruth, who had become an angel for these rejected men. Ruth gave them hope, love and care, this made HIV patients live a little longer after being diagnosed with the terrible virus. The authorities were sending more and more people to her to take care of them and give them a better quality of life, until their last days. Ruth when she saw the large number of people she had decided that she had to seek help, many doors were closed to her, even those of the churches, but this did not discourage Ruth and she continued with her laudable work, despite all the accusations that people made to her. Soon her work with HIV patients was brought to light. An incredible woman fighting AIDS, without any fear, just with the immense desire to help these poor sick people, who had lost everything, because of their illness. Over time it was discovered that the virus was not peculiar to gays, heterosexual couples were also suffering with this scourge, and Ruth felt a civic duty to make people aware of the importance of using condoms to avoid infection. In 1990 the investigations of the behavior of the virus, were bearing fruits, and the treatments became more effective, and the patients suffering with this disease were able to lead a long life, reducing the mortality of HIV, but Ruth Coker Burks was the real hero, who faced the virus at a time when everything was fear, stigmatization and homophobia. Where no one wanted to see the problem and misunderstandings were made, where even the governments did not put letters on the matter, Ruth welcomed the infected, gave them her love, her compassion and made them feel accepted. A great job, which today is recognized as an act of immense dedication, regardless of the danger of a deadly virus and even more so the social stigmatization that Ruth suffered from people, who let themselves be carried away by fear, ignorance and collective paranoia, in an era where being gay was a death sentence, both physically and socially.
