In this time and age where everyone wants to make it big, be successful, and live comfortably, there is one question that always comes to mind "Do I study to get a certificate, or should I learn a skill?" "which one would get me to where I want, faster?"
The truth is, both are important, but not in the same way.
A certificate can get you a job, but it will not sustain it if you lack the needed skills in that field of employment.
A Degree or Diploma is evidence. It shows you studied, you were tested, and you passed. It also makes you qualified for job requirements. In some professional fields like teaching, law, medicine, you would need both certificate and skill. You cannot do without one.
Let's talk about skills.
Skill is what you can actually do,like writing, coding, painting, leading, and so on.
Take for instance, you studied a course, say, fine art and all you did was sit in class and listen to lectures, you never attended any practical aspect of the class or you never tried to practice painting.
The end result of it is that, you would make it to an interview, speak well, answer questions. But you would not be qualified for the job because companies hire skills not certificates; they hire someone who can solve a problem.
In addition, in recent times, companies care more about showing what you have built, not your Grade point average.
So, the question of which one wins solely depends on your goals.
If you want a government job, scholarship, a position in big corporation, certificate comes first.
If you want tech, freelancing, content creation, business, and the rest, then skills come first. For long term growth, you need both. But the best approach to all of this, is having a certificate alongside a high demand skill.
I would like to conclude with this: certificate can give you access but skill gets you paid. If you need money, you should consider a skill, and then work towards getting a certificate too. That is, you have both proof and performance.
