Midnight Letters Prompt #17: What app are you addicted to at Midnight

X or Twitter is probably my go to app midnight, even now at 9:50 pm, as im typing this My X page is still opened, its the first app i open when i wake up and its definitely the app i open at midnight, to be honest it was a coin toss between X and tikitok but on tiktok i usually only have one go to page and that is Ray Williams page on tiktok, he tells the best stories ever, and i can go on and on just listening to his narrations but X(twitter) takes the final spot for me, its more diverse and consumes less data if i might add. X is more like youre walking into a Night club but on social medi, with the neon-lit and everything. However, the experience has fundamentally shifted from the chaotic energy of the early 2010s on twitter. Back then, it felt like a collective stream of originality and different personalities but today, the monetization has changed everything. Since the platform shifted toward paying creators for engagement, the "For You" feed often feels like it's being choked by people trying to "win" the algorithm rather than share a genuine thought. From rage baiting to i dare say stupid takes, to recycled tweets. Its just kinda sad to be honest.

The originality that used to define the platform has largely been replaced by a sea of recycled "bangers," AI-generated threads, and as ive said provocative rage-bait designed solely to farm clicks. It’s hard not to notice that many of the accounts with the most visibility are simply repeating the same things to trigger payouts from the revenue pool. I always just skip the "What's your take on this?" prompt.

But then again despite these flaws, the app remains deeply enjoyable perhaps even more so if you treat it like a garden that needs constant weeding. If you spend enough time muting specific keywords, blocking the engagement farmers, and meticulously grooming your feed, the algorithm eventually learns exactly what you’re looking for. By filtering out the unnecessary things the app transforms back into a tool where you can still find niche communities, real-time news(very important), and i dare say, X is like the best place for finding "just out news", its even faster than your local news tbh, if you can filter all the fake news first that is. Sometimes i can find myself going hours scrolling through X and sometimes i can just be alone at 1:00 am just smiling and laughing by myself, dropping comments and retweets or quotes.
