We've kind of had this discussion before. For me something is money if it is deemed legal tender by a sovereign state. There have been countless minted coins of legal tender both in modern and ancient history. Used in any other capacity it would be considered an asset/commodity by me.
A coin that carries value in both its legal tender markings and also by its weight in precious metal is a form of currency/money which appeals to.
