Yes, you've just struck upon one of the reasons why I'm still living outside the US right now. Essentially, I'm seeing a growing intolerance for non-conformity on both sides of the political spectrum, and IMHO it's a dangerous time to be different from the herd in certain Western nations. Back home, it's almost like every other person wants to test me to see which political or cultural tribe I belong to. And since I don't really belong to any, they all tend to assume I'm "the other". And I've never quite fit in with the dominant culture, whatever it happened to be. So as weird as it sounds, I feel I get a lot more slack from most Mongolians for being different than I do from most of my fellow Americans. At least here they're happy to leave me alone and just write off any differences & oddities to me being a foreigner. Worst case, they occasionally try to overcharge me for a taxi ride or what not. I can deal with that.
