I've been to the Gobi desert a couple of times, but only on the Mongolia side (not the China side). While there were some areas of sand dunes, I remember most of it being a kind of scrub desert with a lot of small shrubs. Regardless, he's still screwed. Unless he happens to come across one of the five or so Mongolians in the area that happen to have a saltwater aquarium hobby. 😏
