Yeah, I prefer 2001, The Shining, and even Full Metal Jacket & Clockwork Orange over Eyes Wide Shut. It wasn't a BAD movie, it was just not something that resonated with me in any special way.

As to being too clever, I think the best explanation behind all those peculiar details in The Shining (like Danny's Apollo 11 sweater) was that Kubrick was intentionally trolling the conspiracy theorists and film uber-geeks. If he were still alive, just imagine all the fun he'd have messing with them in the age of Twitter!
