I could be wrong, but to me it seems I've seen abusive extremes of 'gatekeeper' behavior a lot more inside the US than here in Mongolia. It's not that it doesn't exist here, but I suppose it's more that the average Mongolian tends to give less of a crap what other people think than the average American (try driving here for a day and you'll see what I mean 😉). And on the US side of things, I think the dysfunctional culture and mainstream news & social media tends to encourage it to unhealthy degrees. Sometimes it feels here like it did in the US back in the 80's or 90's... far from perfect, but at least not nearly so much mindless tribalism and pressure for conformity to authority (whether from the State or anyone else).
