I believe everything can be curtailed if one can learn to negotiate with themselves--their inner critic
My theory:
You can't deny yourselves if something you've grown accustomed to. However, you can negotiate with yourself:

Gambling is affecting our finance
We love gambling
How about we gamble but less
Maybe once a week?
Maybe the next month you gamble once

That way you gain control over your life and addiction to a point you don't need it anymore.
