Well, a degree is basically a certification of knowledge in most cases and by that I mean for courses that are theoretical. Unlike practical courses like engineering and medicine where you need some level of experience, a degree is only a paper stating you know something. How you apply that knowledge in the world will determine your station in life.
Also, there is a difference between chasing a better life and wanting to be rich. With a degree, you are assured to some degree that you will have a better life if you apply your knowledge right. However, becoming rich takes a lot more than knowledge. There are other traits that determine if one will be rich. Being consistent and obsessed about your goal is one of them, coupled with some innovative ideas. So I guess need to identify what they really want.
