Living Exposed - featuring the hit film, "Hidden Figures"

There have been many moments throughout history where I have been proud as a person who happens to be a woman, a woman of color. But it wasn't until I watched "Hidden Figures" on my flight from San Diego to San Francisco that I realize I was proud to be a woman of color, specifically and unapologetically. What these women did for not only this country, America, but for African American culture has me in complete awe.

As an intuitive healer, I'm well aware that we are spiritual beings born into a human body. But as a human, I understand that we've all been conditioned to judge people based on their racial background and even the shade of their skin within said race. On a meta level it sounds petty for us to still be discussing this however many centuries later. But to know that this movie takes place in the 1960s, it doesn't take a rocket scientist (pun intended) to figure out we still have a ways to go to decentralize racism world wide.

The movie was based on these truthful facts:

1. Dorothy Vaughan was promoted to supervisor of West Computing in 1949, becoming the first black supervisor at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA)
2. In 1958, when NACA made the transition to NASA, segregated facilities, including the West Computing office, were abolished.
3. Katherine (then Goble) was originally unaware that the East Side bathrooms were segregated, and used the unlabeled "whites-only" bathrooms for years before anyone complained.
4. Mary Jackson did not have to get a court order to attend night classes at the whites-only high school. She asked the city of Hampton for an exception, and it was granted.
5. Katherine Globe/Johnson coauthored a research report in 1960, the first time a woman in the Flight Research Division had received credit as an author of a research report.
6. Katherine gained access to editorial meetings as of 1958 simply through persistence, not because one particular meeting was critical.
7. John Glen did ask specifically for Johnson to verify the IBM calculations, although she had several days before the launch date to complete the process.

I believe that no one race is more superior than the next. Are we different and uniquely made? Sure! And instead of using those differences against one another we should embrace the differences and use them to push the world forward in love.

This movie has really affected my life in more ways than one. It has put my complaints and ungratefulness into perspective. The perspective that if any of my ancestors from even 50-100 years ago had the opportunities that I have now they would hardly complain about a DAMN thing. They probably wouldn't even believe this World, as I see it today, was even a reality. I've been humbled in the most sincere way. As a woman of color, who also is striving to have a career based in S.T.E.M. and beyond, I salute each and every one of these women and would like to honor them in this simple post.

Dear Katherine, Mary, and Dorothy, I would like to thank you for your courage and strength to not allow your brilliance to be dulled down by those intimidated by the color of your skin. I commend you for using your voices locked and loaded by your brainpower to push this World forward. In that moment I'm unsure if you knew you were making history and the impact it would have on us all but I want you to know your long nights did not go unnoticed. I appreciate each of you! The torch has been passed. Representation is key. Because even if I'm not the next genius in technology, my representation in the industry might spark the interest of the woman and/or man of color to be the change this World needs.

To the actresses, Octavia, Taraji, and Janelle, that gave these women a voice on screen, awards won or not, you're the real MVPs. We love you and need you! The human mind needs to get decentralized, reconditioned, and renewed. Each time this movie, and movies alike are watched, a mind is awakened! Once you know the truth there is no undoing that.
