I saw a number of dragonflies around the River Nene, Northampton and around a river-pool fed by the Nene.
The only one's that landed for photos were the Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum). A good website for info and ID of Dragonflies in the UK is the British Dragonfly Society
I would say this is a Male Common Darter due to the red colour on the body

This would appear to be a Female Common Darter due to the duller colour of the body
